The Brico Bud opinions
As far as I can figure, it is an upgraded Carter-Starter (Al Brisco had all the Carter parts after Carter closed). Now -- I have worked on C-S's and I'm a bit of an advocate for them. But a lot depends on how upgraded it is. They were intended to be inexpensive and were built cheaply. And priced ac...

Hello Anyone have any feed back on the Brisco Bud pedal steel made by AL Brisco. I'm looking at getting a pedal steel - have played 8 string lap up until now. I want a guitar that has the basics in term of levers and pedals 3/4 and most importantly stable tuning, lastly - a guitar that will be relia...

Sounds like you have the best of both worlds now. I tuned my 8 string lap to the lower 8 strings of the common E9 pedal steel. With slants and behind the bar bends you can get a definite country flavour and a few cool pedal steel licks. Can also get some good sounds by using a few open strings in th...

Hey Nathan - not sure if you're decision is made yet but you might also want to pose your question over in the Steel without pedals section of the forum. There you'd get some additional opinions from the lap steelers, many of whom also play pedal.
All the best.
All the best.

Bucket list item.
As an alternative to using lighter Gauge strings I tune down about 2 -3 tones and use heavier strings.

Newbie steel player with a lot of string questions
Hey John. I'd suggest you use the forum search bar- search "string gauge chart". I've seen some good info under that search. Or search under string gauge for C6. Good luck Bro.

Nice playing - no need for a backup track! Re the arthritis- ever think of switching to pedal steel - would probably be a bit easier on the joints.

Hey Dean. I believe James Adam's is also building a carbon fiber composite reso now in addition to his wood reso guitars. He's great to deal with.

Thanks Stefan, I'll check that out. Yeah 12 strings, that would do the trick alright - lots of possibilities there. I've been thinking about a 10 - not sure if I could manage 12?

Two string behind the bar bends
Thanks Fred, you're right on that for sure. It's easy to pull a tendon or ligament. I tuned down to C to lower string tension. Experimenting with some different string gauges now. The lighter strings are easier to bend for sure but a bit floppier. When tuned down, a bit thicker strings seem to work ...

Two string behind the bar bends
I tune my 8 string lap to the high eight strings of the typical E9 pedal steel and have been practicing a bunch of two string behind the bar bends to create some pedal steel effects. (A B pedal sounds, etc) Its challenging to be able to hold the strings in tune so I tune down a bit to lessen the str...

Howdy. I have an 8 string Melbert and use an E9 tuning (the high 8 strings 1 -8) and lower it down a couple of tones so that I can bend behind the bar more easily. I combine with slants to get alot of pedal steel sounds. The Melbert has George Ls pickups - so more of a country tone. You can freestyl...
