The Gibson looks like a skylark, and has some collectability because of its links to the Explorer/Flying V models.

Who star's steels sold

John Enwistle's 200+ guitars were sold at Sotheby's today ... not many bargains. Two of the three steels fetched pretty big sums, including this ricky which I think is an all-metal, http://search.sothebys.com/jsps/live/lot/LotDetail.jsp?sale_number=W03875&live_lot_id =145 This Gibson, which seem...

Jeff Buckey's (www.jeffbuckey.com) instruction material is superb, and will have you up and running for playing in jams etc in a surprisingly quick time. I've been playing a couple of years, but since getting volume one of his Virtual Band Method I've progressed in leaps and bounds.

Cheers

I have an old Regal that had a persistant buzz... turned out to be a cover plate screw. Most of the were pretty loose from a few decades of being unscrewed, and the plywod was pretty much stripped. and barely able to hold them. I used a stanley knife to cut a toothpick into tiny sections and glued t...

PLEASE! Do not put a quarterman in a vintage dobro. If it's an OMI, that's fine. But don't put one in a vintage. The old cones sound great, and pretty different, to the Q mans ... it's a matter of taste. But just think: would you put texas special pick-ips on a vintage strat? or swap out an old P-90...

The guitar still sounds amazing.. the holes don't seem to diminish the tone at all. Yeah, I assumed they were for volume/tone pots (forgot about the input jack ... obvious, really). I've found some reference to dobro putting out electric metal bodies in the late 1930s, but, alas, no pics. These are ...

Brad, no. Not the standard dobro holes. (it has them, too). These are on the lower bout, parallel to the strings. How do I post a pic?

JD uses D tuning a fair bit – more these days than on his older, more bluegrass albums. (Check out little martha on lookout for hope)

It's a great fun tuning, especially for bluesy stuff.

Dobro Query

I've just bought a 1938 Dobro Model 32 metal body "fiddle edge" guitar – nd very sweet it is too – but have a query. There are three holes drilled in a straight line along the lower bought; looks to be for tone/volume pots as there are circular marks in the finish round them. Would these b...

The words of somewhat who obviously hates dobros don't really cut it when it comes to criticising instruments/styles he doesn't even play. Whatever JB's standing is in the Hawaiian music scene, it's absolutely zero in the bluegrass scene ... I remember when that post was put on the Jerry Douglas mes...

RL... interested in your comments on teh Epiphone spider. I agree with you about teh tone; for a low end dobro it does sound pretty good. A couple of words of warning, though ... I had one of these that was pretty good, but the store I bought it from had another which looked like it had been put tog...

Aloha Mikey; I found that the stamped cone really does sound better, -(if by better I mean louder and brasher, I guess) and I like the fact that the original cone is still in there ... I'm probably wrong, but the cone seems to be such a crucial part of the tone that swapping it for a new one is akin...

I have a sililar instrument; f-hole resonator made for Sears in the early 30s. I , too, saw the Lloyd Green pic, and remembered that Lloyd played some great dobro on a Mike Auldridge lp : I emailed Mike, and he told me Lloyd had it professionally set up with quarterman cone and eight-leggd spider. I...

My two cents: if a Shubb fits your guitar comfortably, go with it. It really clamps the strings well and gives the most open tone. The biggest problem is with instruments - unfortunately, probably the majority - with incompatible string heights; impossible to capo the thing in tune!

The GHS Jerry Douglas strings sound great ... for about two days! They also work well for lap steel. D'Addario's dobro set give a lot more mileage. Anyone tried the Martin ones? They're the only sets commonly available from my local music stores, but I'm currently working through a box of the GHS's,...

Cheap Tricones

Any one played the new budget Tricones? Over here they're badged as Vintage AMG-2, but probably go under a different name elsewhere. They're retailing for about £450-£500 here. Also, would a National cone upgrade be in order?

Cheers

Guyatone two pickup model; Nice tone, but quiet . Bought at a junk shop for £60 -- it looked a state, but it cleaned up nicely and I sold it last week for £225 ... the price of steels is going up in the UK.
