Reading this thread, I can’t help but think of the phrase “There is beauty in simplicity.” Music is about creating something that sounds beautiful and you really don’t need big fancy chords to accomplish that.

Holy Cow! I’m thinking it’s time for Paul Franklin to cut his own album, and this song must be on it. In other words….I want more!

Young “Tommy White” with the Whites

https://youtu.be/lgNrgKjOxaw

My Dad recorded this on VHS when it aired and we both watched it over and over. At the time, we didn’t know who the steel player was, we just knew he had technique and finesse out the wazooo. Enjoy!

I'm glad to find out others remember that show because I was really starting to doubt my memory. Leon Rhodes was on there too, wasn't he?

I’ve spent considerable time looking for any copies of the Nashville Scene and have come up dry so far. I used to watch it every morning before I caught the school bus.

Me too! I just installed a Steeltronics single coil in my GFI and was pleasantly surprised at how good it sounds. I had a Wallace TT in the guitar which sounded better to my ears than the original pickup, and the Steeltronics actually has an edge over the Wallace. The only reason I wanted to replace...

I’ve been cleaning and reusing strings for decades with WD40 and you don’t have to remove them. I tear a strip off and old T-shirt then saturate a spot with WD40, (not dripping wet). Thread it around one string then twist it tight, then work it up and down the string. After doing each string that wa...

I used to sit and watch my Dad play through whole songs backing a singer on Cth and never touch a pedal. It was amazing to hear the things that came out of his amp when he did this. Those guys were playing Cth before there were pedals, so they didn’t really need them.

Websters definition of SMOOTH: 1) To hit every string perfectly. 2) See: Buddy Emmons

Ok, it doesn’t say that but….it ought too!

When I got my GFI a few years back, the pedals and RKR were all too stiff for my taste. They were easy to adjust and today they all work just right. It’s just a matter of adding travel to reduce pressure. GFI’s have among the best mechanisms for ease of adjustment and dependability. I’m just outside...

I got so confused reading about all the different ways to tune a pedal steel. I finally sat down and got my guitar perfectly in tune to my ear, then I wrote down how each string and pedal registered on my tuner, and I memorized the settings. That’s what werks fer me!

I also lower my E’s with the RKL because that’s the way I learned and I’m too stubborn to change. However… I have to admit the Emmons set-up lowering the E’s with the LKR makes more sense. I was noodling around once and wanted to lower my 4th and 2nd string at the same time, then realized ...
