I don't suppose there is any one with a masters degree in lap steel performance. That was just a ha ha. But on a serious note, I suppose Don Helms is also self taught, but If he had students, I would want to take lessons from one of those guys because I would be able to make more of impression on th...

tone bars

Here are the ones I have. The Stevens is from 1964. I bought while on a high school band trip in Memphis. That was my first. The last one is the one with the cone shaped butt end. I don't know the brand and I think it is stainless. Does anybody know. http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix1403/14818_...

This Rickenbacker has to have 4 on a plate because of the way it was made in the beginning. Yes they are Kluson. I may try to repair it. I just have not tried repairing a Kluson because of the sealed cover. But a luthier friend told me what to do. So I have the confidence I need to fix it. I too wor...

I don't teach. And maybe I should be taught, but my thoughts are that to settle on a certain tuning is like "what do I want to be when I grow up." So many do not go to college to train for a certain career. But to learn basics that prepare you to learn a profession, generally speaking. To ...

Lap steel identification ?

Can anyone ID this old lap steel. My dad gave me this in 1964. I messed around with this for a while. I stripped the finish from the top. I wish I hadn't done that. About 15 years ago I gave it to a luthier friend. Today I got it back and plan to give it a face lift and electronic restoration for th...

I got this on Monday and played it out Tuesday night. I blew everybody away including myself. I don't play on that string much anyway. Now that I know it's not just my guitar, It's now a non issue.
I love mine as much as you guys love yours.

I was hoping for a little more punch on that string. I was looking at the pickup with a little flashlight and could see what your talking about. I had changed the 8th string from a 46 to a 54 for a lower tuning. That's when I noticed it.

Rickenbacker pickup question

I noticed today as I changed some strings for a different tuning string 8 on the outside neck played at a much lower volume than the other strings. This is a Rickenbacker D8. Any ideas as to what is going on here?

The sound a guitar has is more for the player than his audience. Jerry Douglas could play on a non improved cheapie, and his audience would only hear Jerry. But Jerry would know. That's why he plays a Sheerhorn.

I've put Quarterman cones and upgraded spiders in a few Regal Dobros for my customers. And like any cheap dobro, most of the sound in those is the cone and the spider. Might not satisfy a pro, but if you are a non-pro, how good does it need to be.

I don't play every note with my palm resting on the bridge. But the little gismo that I have put on the instrument does two things. One is that it helps to stop the accidental muting that sometimes occurs. And two, it keeps my hand from hitting the sharp edge of the bridge. A sharp edge is something...

I got this Recording king lap steel for just that purpose. I made a few mods and turned it to a real cannon. The main thing was to get the crappy pickup out of it and put in a Seymour Duncan Classic Stack. And I put a 1/2 in. aluminum piece of round bar to ease up the sharp bend on the bridge. I was...
