Hey, Tim, we've all had guitars that were better suited as firewood but usually not Fenders! :) ...The Fender's are mostly safe despite their proximity, but I gotta tell ya... there have been some frustrating days trying to improve my lap steel chops where it's been a close call! As for that ...

Hi Steven, Since I switched to the Mac (about 3 years ago) I've been using Presonus' Studio One software along with a Steinberg MR816 Firewire interface. The latter has 8 channels of balanced analog I/O and an additional 8 channels accessible via ADAT lightpipe. Making use of the extra digital I/O r...

Yeah -- she's a keeper Alan, but there's a definite threshold for drum tolerance... I've stuck my toe out across that line before and limped back, never to cross it again! :) If I'm totally honest with myself, I'd probably get a lot more accomplished with a setup closer to yours... I often get way t...

As an early adopter of "in-the-box" computer recording 15 years or so ago, I can empathize with the frustration of having that perfect take ruined by a crash... The constant search for system stability, and the constant chase for more processing power to perform relatively simple tasks. I ...

Hey Rick -- I've only ever used the nudge feature to incrementally shift an audio event forwards or backwards in the playback timeline. I've never come across a way to nudge an event from one track to the next (though clearly the manual says it can be done.) I'll take a looksee later tonight when I ...

Don't bother buying NOS EL84's. I do agree as you tend to go through them rather quickly compared to 12ax7's... but I will say, I snagged up a bunch of NOS Telam and Polam EL-84's on the cheap before they caught on, and I do prefer them to the usual suspects. A little less "gainy" and edg...

The body unbolts very easily and you can build your own to your own shape and design, as flashy as you want, and still be able to change back to the original if you ever wanted to sell it. Hmmmmmm... Melobar is already bought and paid for... Add $7,500 for the African Lion full body mount taxidermy...

Doh... OK -- you guys sold me on it! :D Regarding mounting -- when you mention being 7/16" off the deck, this is essentially the string/saddle height versus the surface of the instrument? I did a quick measurement and it does seem to be almost exactly that, so I may be able to get away without ...

Thanks guys. I just realized that Lollar is an actual string-through replacement pickup; would probably require customized brackets/shims/bodywork on the lap steel, which I'm not prepared to do at this point... I'll check out those BG pickups Stephen, and many thanks for your feedback Roman -- seems...

"Supro" inspired single coils for a 6-string lap?

I'm considering replacing the bridge/humbucker pickup in my Duesenberg with a single coil. I've never really gotten on with humbuckers as a guitar player, and while I see the appeal of that sort of tone on a lap steel, the Supro vibe applies better to what i'm doing, on my rig... Single coils would ...

Very cool! I think these are a great way to integrate lap into a live performance -- being a guitar player primarily I'm used to bouncing around and have a hard time sitting still. I really dig the look of that one, nicely understated... does it have the foam body? There were some questionable aesth...

I have MANY old Marshalls, including original plexis. Filter cans get changed only when absolutely necessary. Agreed! At one point I had two blackface Fender Princeton (non-reverb) amps -- a '64 and '65. I used them a lot for recording, so I was pretty familiar with the nuances of how they sounded....

Not to derail a great thread entirely... but can anyone share additional artists/performances worth checking out for some tasty blues inspired lapsteel? Is Martin sending some sort of fabricated spacer? I have a Fairytale, which allegedly has a redesigned multibender setup -- not sure wherein lies the difference. Oooooh. Over-anxious new forum member here - I'll take a crack at it! :D Moving the string closer to the pickup increases volume up to a point where the magnet begins to saturate – then it starts producing a distorted signal instead of simply getting "louder". You could see it on an osci...
