I switch between guitar and steel and have resorted to two separate rigs just to have a little chance that the steel will have some headroom!
At soundcheck I give my "pad" volume - I'll mix myself for the solos and louder parts!

Can anyone tell me how to play this ben keith lick?
I am mostly confused by the chord thing he does at the beginning. it is three chords, and then a little lick. I know the lick, but not the chords. I have a feeling I am going to feel moronic when someone shows me, but I am getting lazy on this one. It starts around :56 and is repeated higher up at 1...

I dont gig that often, and it is usually playing originals in more of an alt-country kind of thing with small guitar amps. Tweed deluxes, etc. I really wanted a BF or a drip edge amp, and decided a cut twin was out of my budget. I got a great deal on a 64 bandmaster, so I picked that up. It already ...

Bassman + Holy grail reverb for pedal steel?
I am a guitar player that has started using pedal steel more and more. I am tired of bringing two rigs! With that in mind, I sold my tweed deluxe :( and am looking for a big tube amp to use with steel on the middle channel and guitar on the front channel with an overdrive box. I am usually a plug in...

My tuner has 5 lights on each side of the note, so I as assuming the first light was -.1, and the 3rd and 4th lights was -.3 I am using a plain 6th, and LKL raises Es to Fs, LKL drops Es, RKL drops the G#, RKR is a doublestop on the 2nd string. I have been trying to slant the bar to get it in tune, ...

G# tuning issue
I have a few years old Fessenden SD-10 I bought used. When I have the A pedal down, the G# string (6th) drops about .1 in pitch. When I use the A+LKL change for the major chord, the string drops .3 in pitch. This is measured with my boss. I am familiar with cabinet drop, and I dont think this is wha...

1st gig on steel
last night was my first gig playing pedal steel guitar. The outputs on the pa system blew up during the 1st song, resulting in us using my steel amp for the vocals! I had to play the gig through my 5e3 tweed deluxe, possibly the worst amp for steel. I couldnt hear myself, and had some tuning issues,...

How to use B to Bb lower LKV
I did some searching but couldn't find an answer.
I am wondering what this one is used for. Ive been playing a few months, and am feeling really great about the other 4 knee levers. Each one was a big lightbulb in my head when I figured out how to use them, but this one just escapes me.
Any tips?

Peavey Special 212 distortion following note?
I have a mid 90s Peavey Special 212 amp that I have been using with my steel. I have cleaned the pots in it, and I resoldered the input jack to fix a cutting out problem. Now I am noticing a hazy distortion that happens after a note is played, and is most noticeable on the fade out of a note. All of...

does anyone know what amp is on this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYKVb7T1n2I The sound I really love is how there is just a touch of overdrive to it when he starts the solo. I am afraid if I get a twin, I will never or rarely be able to get it turned up enough to get this. Is the overdrive becau...

thanks for all the suggestions guys. I am thinking that the 40w-50w amp range will be enough. Ive realized in practice that when I had the HRD up around 10, I wasnt using my volume pedal sweep much. I cut it down to about 5 and I was able to use the full sweep without killing everyone. I just love t...

Something to remember is that in 1968, the twin reverb was $499.50. An inflation calculator turns that into $3,050 in todays money. The reissue costs much less to make than they did back in the day, and the original amps are really being given away for what they are. Boutique amps offer similar qual...

What wattage/type of tube amps are you using?
Ive been using a friend's hot rod deluxe at my band's practices, and it actually sounds pretty good. I would like to buy something sometime soon, but I dont really trust newer tube amps since I build/work on my guitar amps, so I would like to buy an older one and do the maintenance on it. Obviously,...

Newbie Bar question
Ive been learning on a friend's borrowed steel. In the case he had an old stevens bar like this one http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Golden-Gate-Stevens-Steel-Bar-for-Resonator?sku=421090 So that is what ive been using. I like having the section cut out for my fingers to grip onto. I j...

Knee lever resistance on a sho-bud crossover...
I am playing a friend's crossover guitar. I set the knee lever to drop the e's, and last night I figured out why that is a good thing. I am teaching myself. I made up some licks and ran some patterns for probably 2 hours using the knee lever a good bit. I now have a healthy bruise and am thinking th...
