Peavey Special 212 distortion following note?

Post by Robby Osenton »

I have a mid 90s Peavey Special 212 amp that I have been using with my steel. I have cleaned the pots in it, and I resoldered the input jack to fix a cutting out problem. Now I am noticing a hazy distortion that happens after a note is played, and is most noticeable on the fade out of a note.

All of my experience is with tube amps, and I don't have a scope. Any ideas on where to start troubleshooting?

You didn't do anything that would cause distortion. Are you sure it wasn't there before? Maybe you're over-driving the input?

Sorry I wasn't clear. I know I didnt cause it, but I didnt notice it before because of the intermittent signal issues.

It is definitely not an overdriving issue. It happens in both inputs, and is on the fadeout of the note, after I pick it

The same thing happens to me with my Peavey Special 130 (and my Peavey Studio Chorus). I noticed it at first on the Special when the full and/or saturation knobs were engaged on the other (idle) channel, but now it does it pretty much all the time.
Either some sort of filtering part commonly wears out, or Peaveys just aren't real clean. Maybe someone out there has the answer...?
