I own a Jerry Reed collection CD and I pulled out the liner notes the other day to look at who was playing steel on a ridiculous instrumental on there called "Nervous Breakdown".

The liner notes say that it was recorded in Studio One, Nashville, TN on July 21, 1978. The musicians on it are as follows:
Jerry Reed (Guitar)
Paul Cook (Drums)
Paul Franklin (Steel Guitar)
Richard Shook (Bass)
Kenny Penny (electric Guitar)
Chip Young (Acoustic Guitar)

My question is, is this Paul Franklin, Sr. or Paul Franklin, Jr. on steel? I figured this would be the best place to find out.

Whichever one it is, he sure smoked it! My hat's off to him.

Grazie!

Does Paul Franklin, Sr. appear on any recordings, and if so, what years did his recording career span?

See, the best part about being young today is all of the great "old music" that's so readily available--I never run out of new tunes to listen to! The downside is trying to catch up on stuff that everyone else is already familiar with.

I heard Buddy Emmon's recording of "A/The Way to Survive" for the first time in my life a few weeks ago. I enjoyed it a bunch. Of course, I'm sure everyone here knows it inside out. Oh well, hopefully I'll get cut some slack.

Thanks again.

Chris,
Paul Sr. as far as I know, never played Pedal Steel. He just builds them. Paul Jr. plays, and has played since he was a just a kid. They are both very talented gentlemen. And, isn't it great that their two talents blend so well? The son plays the guitars that his Dad builds. You won't find any nicer people than the two of them either. Besides Paul Jr. being one of, if not the best Pedal Steel players in the whole world, as far as I'm concerned..., Paul Sr. builds one of the best guitars in the world. If you don't believe that, just listen to his handiwork on any of Paul Jr's. recordings. I own one too!

Bob, that's incredible! I thought for sure that Franklin, Sr. must play, as well, especially if he builds them. I guess, I shouldn't be too surprised, though. Leo Fender never played guitar but he sure knew how to build ones that players wanted. Still, I would have guessed differently.

E and Walter, I know, isn't it terrific? The title of the song is quite appropriate--if I had to play at that tempo I'd have one, myself!

Paul states in the link below that "Nervous Breakdown" was done in one take... and that he wanted a "do-over" at the time (paraphrasing). WOW - Imagine being disappointed with that ride!
