An old friend of mine has what we think is a prewar Gibson teardrop shaped 6 string. There is no makers name on the head - it looks very much Gibson, there are Grover "open" type tuners, plus there is a number on the "screwed on" flat back 223-2 with a No 1 directly underneath the 3.
Is there anyone out there who might shed some light on this old timer?

Gibson made teardrop shaped lap steels in the late 30's for Montgomery Ward, Also the Kalamazoo brand, Recording King, It could have been made by Gibson, but, it's not a Gibson. Oval shaped Blade pickup?...sorta scalloped peghead, like a new epiphone?...Post a pic if you can,

Similar instruments also appear with the Cromwell label. The one Cromwell version I played (a seven-string) was relatively ornate, with mother of pearl inlay logo on peghead. If there's no name on the peghead of the instrument in question, it's almost surely a Recording King or Kalamazoo, which had stencilled logo only. Nice instrument, worth hanging on to.
