Habanera from Carmen by Bizet, jazzed up

Post by Mike Neer »

I was influenced by many types of musicians, but the stylings of Earl Bostic and Bill Doggett were important. I’m just thinking about presenting great melodies in the best way I know how. In this case, I just went with a nice conga swing similar to a Ray Baretto vibe that allowed me to stay true to the bass line written by Bizet, and then to elevate by walking at the right moment. The steel part was simple and the organ a major last minute addition. Nothing flashy, just groovy.
