Noel Boggs Fender PSG?

Post by Drew Pierce »

I saw an old Fender sunburst double eight, 8/0 cable pull in a second hand store today. What caught my eye was "NOEL BOGGS" in old, worn sparkle block letters on the front apron. It seems basically functional, has obviously been played a fair amount. Also set up with long legs and pedal rods, apparently to be played standing up. The store owner doesn't know much about it except it came out of a local estate. Any ideas what the story might be on this guitar?

Tommy, I don't need it. But looking through the Winnie Winston/Bill Keith book, on page 59 there's a photo of Mr. Boggs standing behind what appears to possibly (likely?) be this very guitar. Pic was taken with Maurice Anderson and Tom Morrell in LA in 1969, suggesting he was playing a pedal steel at that time. His name in the big block lettering on the guitar is identical and the guitar in the pic stands waist high as well. I'll try to get more information from the sellers about it's provenance. If anybody's interested, I can put them in touch with them.

I could send a couple pix to someone who could post them on here. My luck with posting pix on the forum is, well, not good.

The cover of Noel's old album "Hollywood and Vine" shows him playing a Fender 1000.

It’s a historical piece that someone here would definitely want. I say buy it and resell it to someone who DOES want/need it. Sitting in a second hand store in Arkansas is most likely going to put it in the hands of someone who will scrape those letters off and not know what they have.

I sent some pix to a member who contacted me and offered to post them. Those may be coming along after awhile. I also sent a pic of the photo from the Winston/Keith book. I notice also that the cover of Noel's Hollywood and Vine album appears to show him behind the same guitar. Problem is, Noel died in '74 and that album wasn't released until '78?

FWIW, the guitar shows a fair amount of honest wear that shows clearly that it was played a lot.
