Here is one of the loyal, long time members of the OSGA .
Rick's journey started in the late 1800's..just kidding,
and from humble beginnings i.e. a raised nut Stella or
some equivalent at age 8 , taking lessons at the Leon
McAulliff school of steel guitar . At this point he
got a real steel , a M.Ward 6 string. At age 12 , his
folks took him to a Buck Owens concert in Sacramento
Calif where he saw Tom Brumley and that was the turning
point for Rick. He was hooked !!
He took lessons from Rocky Caple {Sawed Off Shotgun} and
graduated to a Triple Neck Fender that had pedals installed
by Shot Jackson . He then acquired a Ben Jack BJ which
he kept long enough to step up to a Clark D-10 made right
here im Owasso. At this point Clovis Richards sold Rick
his first Mullen which he later traded back to Del Mullen
in favor of his current Mullen guitar.
Rick's had a great career in music. As far as I'm concerned
the big hi-lite was playing with Carl Belew who went on to
write Lonely Street and multiple other major hits. If Carl
isn't in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, he should be.
I was born in western Oklahoma in '41 and moved with my
family to Stockton, Ca in '43...remember that cause we'll
revisit that later. In 2012 I did a season in Cody, Wy
doing Cowboy music in a Chuck Wagon themed show at Cody
Cattle Company. When the show finished we'd go to the
record booth and sign autographs. I was wearing my Okla
Steel Guitar jacket that I received from Marty Neer and
Rick Crow.
A guy walks up, saw the logo on the jacket that said
Tulsa . He said "I'm from Tulsa...actually Mounds and
said "I've got a friend who lives in that area and he
said "actually Hectorville"....that's where Rick and
his sweet wife live....Hectorville. Small world ? It
gets smaller. Rick and I were talking one time about
where we grew up and , I'll be darn if he didn't mention
Stockton , Ca. I was there from 1943 to 1966...Rick was
there in 1963. Did we know each other? no but talk
about coincidence, does it get any better. Just thought
I'd throw those stories in. Rick's going to be in Jenks
on the 24 th and 25 th. You should be too....Saint
James Presbyterian, South Elm , Jenks Ok
