I think they were fairly common.
Technically they are bolt-on changers. BUT when they talk about vintage bolt-on guitars they're talking about metal neck guitars that were made in certain years. Whenever they made a wood neck, it was bolted on.

Emmons Wood Neck Guitars
I've owned several Emmons wood neck guitars and they all sounded great!
Here are a couple photos of #8 (1164008W). I recently did a thorough mechanical rebuild on it before selling it to my friend, Jesse Cunningham.
Here are a couple photos of a '65 D-10 that I restored a few years ago and sold to my friend, Jim Hussey.
Here are photos of a '72 lacquer D-10 I restored for myself but later sold to Kimo Jones.
Here is a '74 Emmons D-10 owned by Melvin Duffy in the UK that I rebuilt mechanically for him. He didn't want anything done to it cosmetically.
This '72 Emmons D-10 was sent to me from a customer in Canada for a complete restoration.
Last but not least, here are a few photos of an S-10 that I created from various OEM parts for my friend, Rick Pedrosa. It was originally a Black Rock style guitar but I transformed it into a Pro style wood neck guitar.
