"Must Have" Dobro Albums???

Post by Jim Fogarty »

Looking to add to my collection, now that I'm obsessed with the reso.

So what are your MUST HAVE dobro albums. Unless it's something particularly rare or unknown, let's put Jerry Douglas aside for right now..........we can safely assume ALL his recordings are musts!! lol

Whatcha got??

Thanks!

The Great Dobro Sessions is a must have.
Three Bells, Mike's last album with Jerry and Rob
The Resophonic Rodeo for some 7 string action.
One of my favorite records of all time: Peter Rowan and Jerry Douglas's duet album Yonder
Orville Johnson's Freehand
Six String Swing, Billy Cardine
Skip, Hop, & Wobble. Must have. Jerry Douglas with Edgar Meyer and Russ Barenberg
Stobro's Blues, Ferrell Stowe. For different tuning
Stone Bottom Boogie, Junior Barber. I'd put this in must have category.
Gene Wooten, Don't Look Now
Rose Extended C6: Cabinet by J.R. Rose with mechanics engineered by Darvin Willhoite.
Williams D10 9x9.
Mullen Pre-RP D10 8x5
Desert Rose S10 4x5

Check out our German Forum friend, Martin Gross. I'm not sure if he has any albums out but there are many of his videos available on youtube.
Here's his version of "Teach Your Children". Super clean picker - I love his string pulls behind the bar.

Memories of Foggy Mountain (Josh Graves)
Friar Tut (Tut Tayler)

also

Dobro/Blues and Bluegrass (Mike Auldridge) - You REALLY have to have this one.

Beverly King has two or three Oswald style (and sounding) records. Her tunes are simple, easy to learn and great to begin with.

Somebody on Forum may have some of them.

Thanx,
Jim

A must have (and I'm surprised that it hasn't been mentioned yet) is "All Old Friends" by Stacy Phillips....this recording has just about every style of dobro tune and dobro infused tunes spanning a wide variety of genres....and his playing is over the top....f you are learning or entering the realm of dobro, this is an eye opener & game changer....styles he covers are:

Western Swing

Hawaiian

Bluegrass

Blues

Old Time Country

Folk

Tom Swatzell of Mel Bay fame put out a few and it's easy playing stuff. I didn't see his name but with my poor eyes, I could have missed it.

Gene Wooten-Gene Wooten Sings and Plays Dobro

EmmyLou Harris And The Nash Ramblers-Live At The Ryman

Learn how to back up a singer by listening to Al Perkins back up Emmylou on this 1992 live recording. It's do-able by us mere mortal men.

My current passion is Andy Hall with Infamous Stringdusters.

Tacking on a few from Megan Lovell...

Lovell Sisters - Time to Grow
Larkin Poe and Thom Hell - Sound of the Ocean Sound
(The first Lovell Sisters album also has some very good playing too, although I prefer the songwriting on the second one.)

Slightly out of the expected style but he plays a dobro! Barney Isaacs and George Kuo - Hawaiian Touch
Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling
I hear the rolling surf calling
Calling and calling to me

Not mentioned yet, I think, would be Orville Johnson. His albums can be found on Bandcamp, and several are priced at "name your price", where you can even enter zero. Yep, he's willing to give them away.

I particularly like his DOBRO NO DOUGH, BRO album. This album is definitely NOT bluegrass - more light jazz, swing, and bossa-type stuff. His most recent one, ABRACADOBRO!, is also a "name your price" album on Bandcamp, and has a nice mix of tunes.

He's a forum bro, and always posts that his albums are available free - but if you can slide him a few bucks, I'm sure he'd appreciate it - always good to support a forum bro.

Next: THREE BELLS - Jerry Douglas, Mike Auldridge, and Rob Ickes

If you like your bluegrass straight up, no chaser, then Andy Hall has a couple of albums I've listened to on Youtube

Also, Bill Frisell's album NASHVILLE has Jerry Douglas playing on it - easily missed with all of Jerry's studio work. I particularly like the cut ONE OF THESE DAYS, and Jerry's dobro is pretty prominent in that one. I wouldn't rush out and buy the album for the dobro, but I'd sure cue it up on Youtube or preferred music streaming site.
