Sorry paul, i really don't hear Weldon in there. Hal. Maybe. I bet this turns out to be a "not well known" player.

I think that is undeniabley Hal Rugg. A lot oh his signature licks, especially that fast run.

Just a wild, guess, but, perhaps it's Billy Mize? He was a steeler as well as a singer.
Pedal steel, lap steel, resonator, blues harp - why suck at just one instrument when you can do so on many?

I too thought Billy might have done his own work. My number one choice is Hal Rugg but I just am not positive. The more I hear it the fast runs just do not sound like Weldons speed picking.

IMO, this sounds like Jay Dee.

Sounds like Hal to me too. Could possibly be Sonny, but I don't think I could bet on that. The fast licks sound like it could be Weldon, but the rest is Hal's tone and style. I would really be shocked if it was Jay Dee.

Here's another vote for Hal Rugg. Similar "Emmonsy" tone, and many of the hot licks sound like his "one pedal, two finger, two string song" speed-picking exercise played at warp speed. Don't think it sounds like Billy Mize. Cool song though, and thanks for posting it.

Ivan say almost 100percent, this is Hal. No one could copy that close. Plus that is the way he played during that era

If it ain't Hal Rugg it is someone that has studied him for a long time - I will go with Hal.

If Billy Mize could play steel like that he would be known as a steel player not a singer . I think its Hal Rugg .

Billy Mize was part of the Bakersfield Sound, and wouldn't have recorded in Nashville, so I doubt itis Hal Rugg. Mize, Chalker or Brumley?

I was just doing some surfing on Billy, and apparently he received a steel guitar on his 18th birthday. It would be great if anyone has this album and can name the steel player.

Praguefrank's site says it was Hal Rugg or Duane Becker on steel/dobro. Sounds like Hal Rugg to me.
