Thanks Bob Knight - another reason to listen to the song again. If it's not Pete Drake it must be a steel player who can sound this good in another players style. The song sounds like it was recorded in the early to mid 70's in Nashville with Nashville session musicians. If so - and it's Nashville - but not Pete Drake - which 70's Nashville session steel players would be capable of this? My guess would be Weldon Myrick.
Going to listen through again.

Interesting discussion. Well, the singer is Kenny Vernon who recorded a lot for Chart Records (with Lloyd Green on steel) but my impression was clearly Pete Drake on this one. I must admit that I don't have cover info, the track comes from a private CD that Kenny himself sent me a while ago. It is a "Greatest Hits" compilation with his 70s recordings. Let's see if somebody else has accurate info on this one.

Great singer! There's quite a bit of his work on YouTube:

Tony Booth also did a great job on this song. I've always assumed it's JayDee on steel but it may be Jerry Brightman.
