Meat and Potato Man - Pedal Steel thru Focusrite 6 usb.

Post by Kjell Helde »

Hi my frends:
Like to share the "Meat and Potato Man" with some mistake, played on my Hal Rugg Franklin thru my new Focusrite Saphire 6 usb audiocard.
I must tell you, I got a brand new sound coming out of my Franklin thru this card.
The steel is going to a profex II thru a simpl Behringer tube preamp and to the FRS 6 usb. There is put a compressor and a litle Focusrite reverb on it. Thanks to my friend :) David Hartley for the tracks.

It is on my player on the left side on my page.

Hi

Post by David Hartley »

Twice I have clicked on Kjell's link, and twice, I can't see anything?

Is it an "iPad" thing happening to me again?

If it's on YouTube Kjell, post the link to it here as well.

If it's just an audio recording, can you link it here directly to your track?

I live on my iPad now :D

I am looking forward to hearing it, you can't go wrong recording through a Focusrite.

Have you tried a direct recording from the steel into the Focusrite just using your volume pedal? You will be surprized how good it will sound. I used to use the Profex but found it to better without!

Say hello to Atle for me. I have emailed him, and have no reply. Is he out on the rigs?

I need to know dates for 2011 Kvalsvic Days.. Let him know Chello..or tell him to call me. thanks.

Oh, and don't wear my Franklin out, will you?

David, Kjell posted it on the Steel Guitar Network. It is the second item down on the page that opens. Click on the arrow and it starts playing. Try from your home pc, don't know if your ipad can see that or not. If you can't hear it, you are really missing out on something. That Kjell and his Franklin are getting their sound down pat now

Focusrite Sapffire 6

Post by Kenneth Kotsay »

KJELL - "Meat & Potato Man", your recording of this song was very professionally done, you had excellent tone, seems to me you belong in Nashville. Great job, Great Sound.

Now for my questions:
Is the F. Saffire 6 USB a computer interface recording/play back device only?

Can you use it with your steel & sound equipment live while performing home or on stage, without hooking it up to a computer.

If you hook it up to a computer can you you still play live?

I read the specifications for this device and it stated it has no power supply, you plug it into yout computer via USB.

What connections (jacks) do you use when you hook this devcie up (Input, Output)?
What settings do you use to get that great sound?

Also, I have the same equipment as you, a Franklin D-10, Profexx II, A Peavey DPC 1400i power amp and 2 Peavey 112s speaker cabs.

Hi Ken, I hope you don't mind me jumping in here, just to answer your question briefly, think of it as an audio interface, or an external sound card for your PC or MAC. A way of getting a quality signal from any instrument/microphone into you PC/MAC recording software.
It has mic line inputs and the output is the USB lead to your pc. Its not a preamp to take to a gig or anything like that.

Ken:
You got a E.mail. :)

David:
It can be used on a gig with a laptop, if you have more line output from your steelsetup.
I have a signal xlr line out of my Mosvalve 500 amp.
This signal is on the line even if the amp is off. :D
But you record only the steel. If you go mono with the steel, then you can tap the main stage mixer in to the FR 6 secon input, and listen to it in your bed when you get home.  :whoa: :D

I looked up the price on this in Canadian $...it was about $250. I was surprised at the relatively low price compared to what this equipment can do. Which means, Kjell, that you likely paid something like
kr.3000 for it which translates to twice as much.
Was I close?

DAVID & KJELL - Thanks guys for the information I was searching for on the Saffire 6, I also went to Youtube and they had some video demonstrations on this device, guess I'll go out to Guitar Center tomorrow, they have it for $199.00. The only thing I don't have is a MAC, my PC is Dell.

Hi kjell

Post by David Hartley »

Hi Kjell,

Kenneth asked "Can you use it with your steel & sound equipment live while performing home or on stage, without hooking it up to a computer. "

And the answer is no!

It's a recording interface. Of course it is portable enough to take a laptop with it to a gig and record live, but it is not designed as a preamp to use live as such. It is a sound card. Kenneth, you are going down the wrong route if you are considering using this just to produce a good stage sound, although it will probably power up with a USB power supply, without a PC, you won't be able to access the software mixer to adjust input, output levels and FX. There may be 'latency' issues too. Focusrite products used to be very expensive a few years ago, like everything, the prices come down over the years. For recording, and for the price, you won't get a better true signal from your steel, or any other source put into it. Get an expensive microphone for your vocals and acoustic going into a focusrite, and you will have all you need for very high quality recording.

Anyway, have fun, keep recording and posting your work Chells, and look after my Franklin, I promise, I won't forget to bring it home in 2011, I know how much you want me to have it.

Kenneth, please email me if you wish, I have a few years experience with Focusrite and I have other information which you may like to know before you visit your guitar centre.!

b0b will move this soon, it's turning into a recording thread!
