New Clip of the Week 01/03/10

Post by Walter Stettner »

Good Morning and Happy New Year!

Let's start the New Year with an interesting clip from 1975. I freely admit that I have never heard the name of this steel player before, but is is doing some great back-up work on this old Floyd Tillman classic:

Enjoy the music!

Here's a wild guess for you. I read up on Floyd and see he is from Texas. So..the steel player is also from Texas. What steel player have I never heard before although he has played on some 200 recordings?

My guess is Jerry Blanton on steel. Jerry is from San Antonio.

I told you it's a wild guess...

To correct a possible misunderstanding - the singer is not Floyd Tillman, he wrote that classic. I agree, this is a very tough one, also the singer is not one of the popular major stars, but the version of the song is worth listening. :)

Sounds a little like Little Jimmy Dickens but probably not. The Steel is very good but seems at times to override the singer. Recordings can be subject to the whims of the "Mixer".

Ok, here is the answer - the clip comes from the CMH 5-LP set "200 Years Of American Heritage In Song", the singer is Ralph Smith (brother of Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith who produced the album), the steel player is a guy named Jeff Whittington - does anybody have more info on him? He also plays banjo on the album. The set features songs throughout the American history, in mixed quality - some are really nice and enjoyable while others are hardly worth listening (IMHO).

There's more talent hidden out there than we can imagine. Never heard the name before.

Didn't take too much digging. http://www.jeffwhittington.com/
I have heard his song "If My Nose was running Money" on youtube.
He worked on the Arthur Smith Show as a studio musician. So there's the connection.
Read his bio. Quite the musician, especially ban**o.
Certainly no slouch on pedal steel either.
