What did you use to boost the signal from your instrument enough to drive the power amp?

The noise/distortion, etc of the preamp is not normal. There is a problem with the amp if it's as you say.

I wonder if he is referring to a certain "graininess" that I have noticed in some at low volume. This seems to go away as the amp is pushed a little bit.
