Gold Tone Weissenborn LM or SM?

Post by Veli-Pekka Haanmäki »

I'm looking for a Weissenborn-type guitar with a limited budget and availibility here in Europe.I can get a new Gold Tone LM (mahogany laminate) for 570 euros or SM model (solid mahogany) for 679 Euros.Since my budget IS limited and every cent counts AND I don't have a chance to try before buying (mail order),I'm asking for some advice: is the SM model (solid mahogany) considerably better in sound than LM model (mahogany laminate)? Here is a link to both guitars:

Thanks very much for your help!

The shop I work in has both the LM and SM in stock, and I've played them (not well, mid you!) quite a bit. The LM is a nice guitar, for sure. It's finished well, sounds good. The SM, on the other hand, is quite a bit louder, richer and more harmonically complex. I'd go for the SM withour thinking about the extra $$, if I were buying.

If you're looking to put a pickup in the guitar and play it mainly amplified, then the laminate would probably do you. OTOH, if you will be playing mainly acoustic, then by all means, save up your Euros and get the solid wood model.
