Where is the highest concentration of gigs for psg ?

It is not here in northern NJ/NYC. Is it one place? Nashville? The deep south? The mid west? The north west? CA? OK? TX? Anybody know?

Other than the top guys working in and out of Nashville, my impression is Texas, Oklahoma and Arizona, the old dance hall states, have the most steel gigs. But they also have the most steel players, both working and not. It would be interesting if there were a way to sort the Forum membership by location.

I can tell you that here in the Houston area the gig situation is nothing like it was a few years ago. You could play 5 nights a week in a house band and make a living playing. Now is hard to find 1 night a week. Maybe Austin or the Dallas area still have a good country music scene. The small opry shows are the only regular gigs that I ever hear about anymore. If your with a road band I guess you can still do Ok.

I was living in Houston in 07. Better than NJ/NY perhaps, but still not good enough to keep me there.

organizing is the solution

Post by Michael J Pfeifer »

I'm a former union member/organizer. I've attempted to organize local musicians to no avail. experience tells me not to put a great deal of effort into it. We must organize to rescue and restore the night club circuit. we must eradicate,dj's,karaoke, open mic, open jam from our night clubs. this can be achieved by working within the community on a local level. however, it is hard work. why should the public pay to hear you and me when it can get free,dj,karaoke, open mic, open jam?

. . . my impression is Texas, Oklahoma and Arizona, . . .
Can't help the curiousity, Dave, but what case do you have for Arizona? I'll admit, I'm not actively looking, and I'm not in touch with many colleagues, so from whence the vibes?

AZ has more than most places. There are still several places you can go see a steel player in a band or go play.

Tucson and Phoenix area both and know of some in Yuma plus Casono's

Texas & Okla are still good according to friends

My impression of Texas, Oklahoma and Arizona comes mostly from what I hear on the Forum. Several years ago when I went to a conference in Phoenix, I searched the internet for live country music there and got a bunch of hits, way more than you would get in most US cities. Where there's country music, there are steel guitar opportunities. Unfortunately I didn't have time to check out any of the places in Phoenix.

I'm not so sure about Oklahoma having any real concentration of places to play.

Texas on the other hand still has many places for a steel player but unless you are multi-instrumentalist and sing a little, you may not get hired as bands are cutting down to 5 pieces these days.

I have stayed very busy over the years but most bands I get a chance to see have no steel and as a side note, most major bands I open for at Billy Bobs don't have steel.
