I love this. I've probably listened to it at least 25 times since I found it a while back, and no tellin' how many times I've rewound and listened to the break. I like any and everything Moon does, but this one does something for me that no other does. I've been fortunate enough to see Moon with Waylon twice, once in the early 70's and again in the early 80's.

Phenomenal clip - phenomenal, soulful playing. I saw Moon & Waylon & The Crickets back in the early '80's in NYC. They called the show "Nashville on Broadway." I remember two things vividly: how the little hairs on the back of my neck stood up when Ralph played some ballad before Waylon came on (kinda like the clip that started this thread); and how good a guitar player Waylon was.

yeah, that's great music and sensitivity on everyone's part.
i got a kick out of the drops of nose running dribble from waylon, accentuating the aspect that he freely admitted his most creative times were framed with coke and wild living! ...which, by the way, is true for many, many artists and pickers.
ralph even talked about how hard it is to clean the bits of tomato skin out from between the strings after you throw up on your steel.

Chris,

That was nasty. :-) I thought blowing lunch on equipment was reserved for Drummers. Is this something Moon did, or Waylon did on Moons SHO~BUD ?

It would be especially difficult to get all the "stuff" out of one of those "dust catcher" fret boards on the Sho-Bud. "Nasty" is right.

Bump for a great classic player and to maybe get back on track and just listen. Who cares about the tomato barf anyway?? That "dribble" was just sweat running down his face..it's hot under them spots.

Probably about 1970 a fellow built a 1000 seat club in a small town that when I graduated from high school, there were 12 seniors. Got Waylon to come and play in 1974, but he didn't bring Mooney, had one of Tom Paul's guitar players doing long pulls on a six string with a volume pedal. Some of the band were coming to the back bar on break behind our table, and I was visiting with them. They told me to go up and talk to the big guy doing sound, if I wanted to meet Waylon, so I did. Back then I had hair to the middle of my back, and was wearing a tank top, the fellow looked at me and said I was alright to go behind the stage to the dressing rooms. The rest of the band were smoking pot, but not Waylon, he pulled up a chair for me, and I visited with him for a while. Pretty soon the fellow came back wanted to let some people in for autographs, the band started waving some of the smoke out, and the girls started coming in, I stayed there while Waylon was signing belts, etc. Then this hard looking woman came in, and Waylon asked here what she wanted him to sign, and she pulled the top of her shirt down, and said sign this. Waylon put his left hand on her shoulder, and supported his right hand and signed her boob. She pulled up her shirt and cussed, and stomped out. Waylon said, "you know I sure get tired of this". The fellow really had class.

Good story. Thanks for sharing. Both times I've seen Waylon, he had Moon. The first time I saw Waylon and Moon, was at an ampitheater that George Jones built in a park he developed behind where he and Tammy were living S. of here in Lakeland, FL. We got up close. Seems like it was 1972-73. Great music at a small venue is hard to beat. Next time I saw them was at a larger venue in Tampa. During the warm up, before Waylon came out, Moon played Crazy Arms. I don't really know where the sound mans head was (I have an idea), but during that instrumental, he didn't have Moon up loud enough in the mix. I was fit to be tied. :x My date was getting a kick out of me being so mad about not hearing the steel loud enough in the mix. They finally got it right.
