Post by Sonny Jenkins »

This is a guitar that I took to Dallas to sell,,used it for demo,,and have played it on a couple of gigs,,,so the used price is $375 + s/h. Has Tru-Tone pick up. Will try to post some pics.

Sonny, I remember that red guitar - it was the only one you didn't sell in Dallas.
I also recall you said you thought it was the best sounding of the 5 guitars you had there . .

Lap steel

Post by John Groover McDuffie »

Hi Sonny; is this a guitar you built yourself?
What kind of wood is the body? What is the scale length? Could legs be installed? Thanks

John,,,Wood is Ash,,,scale length is 22 1/2". I see reason why legs could not be installed.

Rick,,,Thanks again. I will probably concentrate on natural wood guitars for a while. However,,I just bought some more maple and it looks like it has gone up in price,,like everything else,,,so I guess I'll be in the $400-$500 range.

TO ALL PSG PLAYERS,,,especially the D-10 guys that don't use the back neck,,,,myself strickly pedals for ump-teen years,,up until a couple of years ago,,now I spend more time with these little steels,,,these little 8 string guys are TONS of fun,,,not only can you play all the old stuff on them,,,this is what the old stuff originated on!!!,,,SGR, Panhandle Rag, Sleepwalk, Bootheel Drag, San Antonio Rose, etc, etc,,,plus if you have one of these laying around, you'll be much more inclined to pick it up than to sit down at the PSG,,,and then it's CONTINUAL discovery,,,I mean these things are fun!!! I mean this is what our PSG "heros" started on!!!!

I've been playing a couple of 6-string lap steels for a few months now, in C6 and GBDGBD. I like having the 1-3-5 tones on the top as I do in the open-G tuning, so I've been thinking of switching from 6 to 8 strings for C6 tuning. I'm playing a Chandler RH-2 and a Melobar Rattler. Can you compare the tone of this guitar with the TrueTone pickup to the Chandler? Are there any audio clips available for your guitars? Thanks.

Dave,,I have no idea what a Chandler sounds like,,or even looks like. My guitars,,with their Tru-Tone pick ups, are 100% responsive to the amps that are being played into,,when I play into my little VOX battery powered,,it has a VOX battery powered sound,,no more,,no less,,when I play into my NV 112 it has a NV 112 sound. My guitars are capable of the full response of the Amp. The people who have played my guitars seem to be very impressed with the sound,,all a matter of opinion,,,mileage may vary,,,,

He Sonny,

It looks nice, very compact and clean in design.
What kind of tuner assembly is that and did you make the it {the tuner assembly}?
Have you made a guitar with 10 or 12 strings?

Inquiring minds...

Thanks, David Phillips

Yes Dave,,I made the keyless tuner,,,I have them available in 8 string only for 90 bucks. I'll try to post some pics of the detail so you can see how they work soon.

Bump for Sonny!
Just completed a transaction with Sonny and if his attention and care in communicating and in packing above and beyond what most people would consider adequate and his genuine good nature say anything about the lapsteels he makes, then these little babies have got to scream!!!
I'm hoping to pick one up when I gather a little extra money!!

Sonny, what a nice thing to say. Thank you so much.
The little red guitar is a gem - in that price range you can't beat it!

John's post reminded me of your packing job, probably the best I've seen - and I've seen a few.
Antique vases should be packed so well . .
