I never heard a steel version I didn't like. Same with "Shadow Of Your Smile".

MSA Millennium, Legend, and Studio Pro, Reese's restored Universal Direction guitar, as well as some older MSAs, several amps, new and old, and a Kemper Powerhead that I am really liking. Recently added a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored blue Rose, named the "Blue Bird" to the herd. Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic again that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also added a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks.

Buddy Emmons and Jerry Byrd are my favorites.

I saw Reece Anderson play Danny Boy with 4 picks on his S12 Bb6-Maj7 tuned MSA in 1968 at Tom Bradshaw's first West Coast Pedal Steel Show in Napa, California. I'll have to admit, I was amazed .
Since then I heard Buddy and Curly's Versions and liked both of them too.....al.:)

Danny Boy
Big E on the black album, followed by Chalker on the 70's album with Charlie McCoy. Julian Tharpe's open string version also. (I believe it was open)

I heard an unaccompanied version of Danny Boy today by Julian Tharpe on Steel Radio . Is this the version you are talking about ? To me it sounds almost painfully out of tune. Great chords, inversions, substitutions, but.....
Is there another version maybe ? The one I heard could have been a live tape or something like that.

Favorite versions of Danny Boy
My two favorite versions are Jerry Byrd = C-Diatonc and John ‘Keoni’ Bechtel = C-Diatonic! (Just kidding about the sec. choice!) It took 7-tries, but; I never did get it quite right!
