Bill, a good stereo will put most any musical instrument amplifier to shame, tone-wise. Stereos have much more tonal capabilities due to 3 things...
1. Sealed speaker cabinets
2. Graphic equalizers
3. Multiple speakers (crossovers and tweeters)
Trouble is, most home stereo speakers will not handle the dynamics of high volume guitar music (especially that C6th neck).
Musical instrument amplifiers are rugged, powerful, and reasonably compact (portable).
That's why we use 'em
Am I a steel amplifier heretic?

I have found that over the years my taste in tone has changed. I started out with a Fender Super Reverb, 4X10s and then Peavey LTDs(2)and now I have a new Session 2000 combo and a Session 500. I have also discovered that what sounds good at home doesn't sound good at a gig and I suppose a real pro goes with the flow and doesn't try to be so much of his own critic from venue to venue.
