bob i dont know where this goes
and i know its been covered
but its a sad day in country music
when a sound man on a show like the grand ole opry
is so (stupid) that he cant mix a steel guitar
i think that about tells you where country music
is .mel,s music sounded like a cd until they
panned over to the steel , then there was nothing
if i stepped on anybodys toes that may be related to the sound man , well im sorry

Changed channels as soon as they panned to the steel and couldn't hear it. Really tick's me off! WSM needs to hire the sound man from RFD-TV where the steel always sounds great.

I watched the GOO last night on the rerun of the early show and I could hear Terry Playing (which sounded good).I know I would like it if the steel was a lot louder but it was not.It is not loud enough for me ever when Tommy White plays. I do agree that it was not loud enough but they will tell you that the entertainer is the main focus(which we don't agree with as musicians).Ron

Roger, I think you may be correct about the problem being somewhere in the chain, i.e., the cable company. As with Jerry Roller's experience, I watched the rerun at noon today, and Terry's playing was at a pretty good volume level.
Oh, and he was at an incredibly good level as to the artistry of his tasteful, innovative playing!

And did an outstanding job as always.

It was very strange that a group before Mel came on was dressed in everyday looking attire and Carlene said "they just dress any way anymore, don't they". Then out comes the Statesiders dressed great and very pro looking. It took me back to the old Texas Troubadours and the Cherokee Cowboys. They look great and they perform great. The whole atmosphere of the place changed when the Statesiders took the stage.

I have been very privileged to be a member of the Statsiders, Texas Troubadours and The Cherokee Cowboys among other great bands. It always makes you feel special when you walk on stage dressed in those neat suits. The stuff these bands wear now we would not have even wore to set up in. I'm so happy for Mel and the Statesiders. And I too thought Terry was in the mix just fine.

I watched the rerun of the show and also thought the mix was pretty good - I could hear the steel anytime he was playing it and it stood out good during leads.
It just blew my mind that Mel was never a member of the Grand Ole Opry - I just always assumed he was - what is the deal with that - I know in th past you had to perform so many times a year or you couldn't belong, but I think that went by the wayside quite a while back!!

I think a lot of the big name artists are not members and would like to see some feed back re this issue.
Like what are the guide lines that decide
if,when and how one is asked or offered the chance to join.
To name a few
George Strait
The Hag
? Ray Price
I can't think of a lot of them right now.
Getting old,senile.
How about instrumental musicians like some of our steel pickers.
After all they are recording musicians as well as the singing artists.
Seems like there is room for more instrumental performances than just the square dancers and fiddle music.
