Conway Twitty, But Not John Hughey?

Post by Archie Nicol R.I.P. »

`Sleepycreek` yet again provides a nice couple of videos.
Does anybody know who the steel player is? I don't think it is John. Also, he seems to have his abc pedals next to the volume pedal.

I believe you will find that it is Lew Houston.

Thanks, Jerry.
Ray; `Sleepycreek` has posted some great stuff on you-tube. He appears to be a great steel fan, particularly Curly. You may be able to get in touch through his you-tube site.

Jim, that one closeup of the feet sure didn't look like any vp there; seemed to be getting on the "C' pedal with the right foot and getting after the "AB" pedals with the left. On that 2nd song was getting some good "tele" licks, too..... 8)

Lew didn't use a volumn pedal. If you look on the close-up, you'll see him use a volumn knob with the little finger on the right hand. Ray

Must be gettin' old. I didn't notice the lack of a volume pedal.

Just beautiful! Thanks Arch. Conway originally recorded "If you were mine to lose" in 1966 on his album "Look into my teardrops",and then years later in 1988 re-recorded it on his album "Still in my dreams".

Is Conway singing out of time or is it just me? Seems he's holding some of his nots too long but maybe that song goes that way.

Well, Henry, back a number of years ago, it seems for a time it was a trendy thing to do, was to "sing behind the beat". It sounded that way to me, too; or it could have been the recording technology was a little rough, FWIW :?

The chicken pickin was interesting to me, very good steeling. I was not familiar with him.
A little of topic, on the same you tube page there is a terrific version of Rainy Night in Georgia by Conway and Tony Joe White, I thought it was great, but I have no idea who the steeler was.

Howard, I'm thinking that's Robby Turner in the "Rainy Night" video.

Sounds like some "C" pedal mashin' for sure at around 1:45 on "If You Were Mine to Lose"...
