ˆ assume these were posted by Dave at Beer Records who released a fabulous (and sadly, out of print) Hawaiian MP3 CD collection a few years back.

Great clips! It's fun seeing Sol Hoopii even though it's pretty brief. It's also nice to see Steel Guitar music being used to "set the mood" for a pretty sensual scene.

Always enjoyable to hear Sol play. Cool

The so-called hula dancing was atroceous in all of the clips! Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Well what can you expect, it wasn't filmed in Hawaii. Sad

Wow. It is really something to see Sol Ho'opi'i in action. Particularly interesting to see some of his percussive guitar-hitting in the second clip.

The name of that Edward G. Robinson movie with the Sol clips is "Smart Money".

Stop the presses!

Doug Smith just emailed me with a correction. The Edward G movie with the Sol clips is actually.

"The Little Giant"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0024262/plotsummary

Thank you Doug.

Edward G also did "Soylent Green" - go figure. Rolling Eyes

I just spoke with my brother. He's a big Edward G. Robinson fan. He confirmed that Doug Smith is indeed correct, the movie was 'The Little Giant'.

My brother writes:
Doug's right. Smart Money was a different one.

'The Little Giant' was a spoof of Robinson's 'Little Caesar'.

There is a great line in it, he's at some mob guy's house and he's looking at a Renoir painiting.

The mob guy says, "that cost me 100 grand".
Rico (egr) says "those gold frames sure must cost plenty of dough..."

Don't have any comment about the authenticity of the Hula, but if that's what it was really like in LA in the '20s and '30s, then [using Bill Murray Stripes voice] "I wanna party with those guys!" Anyone know where the movie was supposed to be set?

Sol looks to be having a great time in that party clip (though he doesn't appear to be actually playing - in any of the clips). I wonder how many times they had to do that shot... Smile

Here is a synopsis of the flick:

The Little Giant (comedy)

Prohibition is ending so bootlegger Bugs Ahearn (Edward G. Robinson) decides to crack California society. He leases a house from down-on-her-luck Ruth and hires her as social secretary. He rescues Polly Cass from a horsefall and goes home to meet her dad who sells him some phony stock certificates. When he learns about this he sends to Chicago for mob help.
