Collaboration Music

A German singer told me that in the USA were collaboration music forums for musicians were artists searching for musicians and there they play for FREE to the projects of the artists. A kind of online community were all musicians meet to play for artists demo's and projects. Is that true? Have anyone heard similar? They recording their music to the projects at home and mailing via email their mp3 files to the artists. I think that is possible, but for FREE I couldn't believe that. Guys, let me know.
