If an amature steel guitarist was wanting to retire to a place he could always find someone to pick with, where would that be?
It seems Texas love their Country Music, but I thought maybe Renfro Valley, Ky. What do you think? |

There are lots of jams in Florida. If I wanted to, I could probably go to a jam every day of the week. Many of the RV parks have a "jam night" at the park ,plus the other jams. |

You will need a time machine and get zapped back to the 1950's to be in the REAL country music heaven,no doubt about it. |

I had been mulling this exact question 2 years ago,
and Texas seemed to keep being the answer,
until I unexpectedly found myself in Thailand.
Not enough steel playing time here,
but I need not worry about running into an
inebriated cowboy who thinks
Born in Boston
and 10 years living in France are
fighting words...
I WILL make it to Dallas for the steel show sometime,
28 hours flying time or not,
and visit my steeler friends there.
Hillbilly heaven defintely has Jerry Douglas Street for sure,
Bill Monroe Way, Jimmy Martin Truckstop / Cafe, and Delmore Brothers Park too.
Down near the Scruggs Flat's, and the High Lonesome Hills! ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ DLD, Chili farmer. Plus bananas and papaya too.

Well, I can't claim to have visited many other areas of the U.S. but I think the Austin Texas & surrounding area must be a contender. I'm just back from a 10 day trip & saw live music every day including Bobby Flores, Johnny Bush,Justin Trevino, Dale Watson,Jake Hooker, Curtis Potter, Darrell McCall, Frenchie Burke & many others. Also saw Randy Reinhart,Jim Loessberg ,Dicky Overbey & many other great steel players backing these singers.
If there is much going on anywhere else i'd love to know so i can take a trip there next year. |

If you have not been to Renfro Valley, Kentucky, then you will not know what we are talking about.

Not here in LA. Yeah, there are some good bands here, but jammin? Don't think so. Back in northern Alabama/southern Tennessee every little bar had live music. They didn't pay much, but sure was fun. They always welcomed a PSG to "sit in" and often asked you join the band. You could play with a different band every night of the week if that's what you wanted to do. I've lived out here about 8 years now and have found less than a dozen musicians interested in jamming. They all want to get rich... and there's no place to play anyway. Need company in Thailand?? |
