Thanks to all who took part in the February 18th Ozark SGA Jam. It was a fun time and lots of great steel playing. And we certainly don't want to forget the delicious treats. We are really looking forward to the April Jam...see all of you on the 15! |

We wanted to say that we had a lot of fun yesterday also. Austin said he really enjoyed picking. It was very nice to meet Tyler Hall. He is a very nice young man who has a special touch I call finesse on the guitar. We enjoyed his playing.
It's always great to get to hear everyone pick and visit with our friends. Look forward to the next one.
Mr. Jerry Hanley, we hope your fingers are healed over next time, so we can hear you play again.

Hank, sorry I couldn't make it. Maybe one of these days I won't have to work Sunday nites and I'll get to go to a lot more places. I can usually get off on Sunday nite for the conventions but its hard to trade all the time. Keep up the good work my friend. Ray _________________ Ray Qualls

Boy Dana, you sure are right !!! This was a super jam. All these guys sounded like seasoned veterans on the steel. And Tyler Hall was awesome. It looks like him and Austin will be the next Generation of Super Pickers (and they both are caring and love to share anything they know). Jack Musgrave picked the daylights out of that old pedaless fender steel. My wife said that is the first time she heard a steel without pedals sound really great. I was the fortunate one to take a class with Mike McGee and he said since I was the only student that I got to choose my own assignment. I chose to learn a few Lloyd Green licks I heard on some records. Mike showed them to me and I got to use one tonight at the Senior Citizen Dance. Mike is so gifted and these guys don't know what they are missing if they don't get in on one of his lessons next time. I don't know how Hank Ruf was able to coordinate all that was going on but he did and it was a huge success. Only wish Terry Bethel could have been there to complete the event and as usual, inspire us all. |

That meeting with Mike was something Austin was going to sit in on, but we were never clear on a time or exactly what it was all about. By the time we realized when it was, Austin was already set up and well into the jam. I have to make sure I get more details next time.
Austin did get a small piano lesson from Venda that day though. She teaches Dalton (who is doing so good on piano) and he had a duet to play and needed a buddy. Austin quickly learned the other part to help Dalton out. When we arrived home that night, both boys quickly learned both parts and I have heard nothing but that since then.
Thanks again to everyone who takes time to work with or even just visit with Austin and Dalton. We have grown to love all our steel guitar family.

Very enjoyable day for my wife and I. Got to officially meet and visit with Randy Stewart (I won't say Austin's dad like he's used to hearing) and would like to lure him and his plumbing business to N.W. Arkansas but not much chance as father-in-law has already gave it a shot, I understand.
Nice to visit with Bob Hempker and Roger Blevins a while. With Hank's permission, I'd like to throw in some paper stick on name labels for next meeting (for my benefit more than anyones) I'm bad on learning names.
Nice arrangement of newer steels there with some great sounds - I was the only one with an antique except for Jack's triple neck Fender.
I have heard rumors that a club web site may be in the making---good place for member faces and timely articles, etc- Terry came in as we were getting ready to leave--had a few hurried words before goodbyes.
Hank and Mike---thanks so much for your efforts in promoting the club--I understand that there may be a seminar on "maintenance issues" next month---great idea.

[b]Hey Bill, it was nice to meet you. Randy and I had seen you around, but never had a chance to visit with you.
I didn't know you were trying to convince Randy into moving or I would have been over there frowning at you. I sure do like my Kansas land here.
Speaking of Kenny going to give a maintenance seminar, it looks like he has already begun practicing for it. Anyone know what he was up to here......

Thanks for all the replies. The following list is what the Association has planned.
April 15: Maintenance Seminar [ from 1:00 until 2:00 ] Held in one of the smaller rooms.
This will also be are fundraiser jam [ from 1:00 until 5:00 ]
June 17: Theory Seminar [ from 2:00 until about 3:00 ]. Teacher will be Mike McGee. This will be held in the main room where the jam will take place. The guys playing in the jam will not have to move. There will be a large crowd for this and that is why we will have it in the main room.

I'm excited by the number of people who came to our meeting. I thought we had excellent attendance. But please don't give me any credit! Hank and Terry do all the hard work. So my special thanks for their efforts.
Dana, Rick and I are disappointed that Austin didn't come in with us because we had both counted on getting to learn some hot licks from HIM! He's already teaching us all.
I guess I'm gonna have to buy another guitar and carry it with me so I can force Roger Blevins to play (my poor aching back, with all that extra weight)! Luv u buddy, you'll always be my hero.
Bill, great idea on the name tags.
This area is blessed with a huge number of fine steel players. As I talk with players across the country, I find that this is not the case for many of them. Many of them feel isolated and wish they could participate in a club like ours. We have a fine facility for our meetings. I don't think we should take this abundance of local talent and knowledge for granted, because that knowledge is here for the asking. If you're in this area and you have questions and need advice and tips, COME ON DOWN! This club has so many resources to draw from.
My sincere thanks to all of our local players who are supporting this club. Let's just keep making it better and better. |
