Hi Everyone
I am new to pedal steel guitar after having played key boards for many years. I bought a Carter Starter, and was woundering about the strings. Carter uses a light set of strings on the Carter Starter, and my question is when the time comes to replace them what would the out come be if I used a heavy set of strings. How would this effect the sound of the guitar and would the heavy strings be better than the light set.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Frank

Frank I use Gearge L's nashville chromatic e9th, I like them and to me the hold up well, you will find yourself experienceing with brands, some guys like jagwire, some like cobra etc..I wouldn't think that going to a heavier gauge of string would be a problem as long as it isn't extreme, call to be safe

Just wanted to say thank you to all those that responded to my question. It has been a great help, and being new to psg I am sure I will have more questions, and this forum is the best along with the people on it.

I just bought a Carter-Starter myself. The steel guitar player in our band took it home last Thursday to go over it, set it up, check it out, etc. I'm getting back at band practice tonight, and I'm excited. I'm the bass player in the band. Been playing bass since June 1962.
Anyway, I was down at my local guitar store yesterday and bought a set of D'Addario E9 steel guitar strings. Did I make a mistake? Are these strings OK for the Starter, at least for a beginner, or should I try and take them back?
The more I read here, the smarter, and DUMBER, I get. This place is wonderful.
Thanks.
Keep Thumpin'! Sammy!
