My Tribute to Tommy Morrell

Post by Larry Bell »

Last time I talked to him I called early afternoon (STILL WOKE HIM UP) to ask him how to go about licensing 'Pterodactyl Ptales' for my new CD. It took me several trys to finally get the point across to him (you wanna do WHAT?) that I wanted to pay him for the rights to record his tune. He just said, "Oh hell, I don't care, if you really want to talk to somebody about it call the record company . . . or just forget about it."

So I did . . .
. . . I put the tune on my CD and here it is (click)

He had a depth to his playing that few others could boast. He knew every jazz standard ever written -- and recorded most of them. There are wolf tracks in heaven.

Great version of a great tune. Thanks for posting. Did Tom ever get a chance to hear that?

Thanks guys
Tom was very special to me. He was walking proof that a TON of music can be played on a nonpedal steel.

You're right, Lee, I did play it using pedals but Tom's version was that really hip T-10 nonpedal Bigsby. TONE TO THE BONE and chops that go for miles. I saw him as the next generation of Joaquin Murphey. Who's gonna fill THOSE shoes now?

Billy,
I kept meaning to send him a copy and I'd hoped to make a trip to Texas but I didn't -- now it's too late. There's a lesson in there somewhere.

Thanks, Vern and Russ
That was from my CD I've Got Friends in COLD Places (click for info) . I made sure that the other soloists (gtr / keys / fiddle, etc.) were well represented in the arrangements and in the mix. I have some talented Friends.

(sorry to diverge from the tribute to Tommy topic)
