Digital Editing - What program do you guys use?

I'm looking to do some digital editing of some tracks that my band has recorded. Basically I want to arrange song order, set ID's for a CD and adjust volumes. What programs are you guys using to do this? Any free ones out there?

I don't know if it does the ID and CD stuff, but Audacity is pretty cool, open source too.

I have a registered copy of "Goldwave" and I use that for my audio "mastering" (after it's mixed down).

I just downloaded a 30 day free trial of Adobe Audition 2.0. I just spent the past 3 hours messing with it and it is SUPER cool! It has everything I was looking for; Multiband Compression, Parametric EQ's, and stuff like that. Also easy to set ID's and burn from playlists of ID's.

I'm going to try and get the project completed before my 30 day trial expires!

Anybody else using this product? It appears to be very nice.

Mark,
Adobe Audition is a re-branded version of Cool Edit Pro. Adobe bought Syntrillium Software awhile back and changed the name.
I've been a CEP user for years, it's a great program.

I downloaded reaper.
It's a great program and pretty small.
don't think you could beat it for
the modest reg. fee.

I have Cool Edit 2000, very nice product. Adobe's version ( repackaged) does offer some extended features .

You can also use the audio sides of Video Editing software to do some neat work too...
As in Premiere, Final Cut, DPS Velocity, etc

If the tracks are already mixed to stereo wavs;
Sony CD Architect will allow you to do what you are asking above.
You can apply EQ and compression/limiting at both the master and the individual track level….Changing relative volumes is as simple as grabbing the top of the track and dragging an envelope down… you can also do your fades in the window…set gaps to default (2sec) lengths etc…. Learning curve of around 10 minutes- 30 minutes.
Great way to lay out an album to Red Book Standard.
Fast clean and non-destructive…. (unless you put your head through the monitor)

However.
If you need to actually tweak individual tracks in more depth, then Sound Forge or Audition/Cool Edit Pro are my choices for mastering editors.

If you want to add overdubbed tracks to the recordings, or re-record individual player’s parts, then Sonar, CuBase, ProTools, Logic etc etc… but I suspect you are past this point in the process.

Pro Tools 7 for multi track work
Soundforge 8 for mastering
Nero for CD burning, adding ISRC codes, CD text etc, etc.

wont iTunes do all that? I beleive you may be limited to "set all songs same volume level" but its free. Reaper used to be free as well. perhaps the older versions still are?
