Bill and Scotty, you really made my day. In the early seventies Gene would sit in with us the at the Blackboard in Bakersfield whenever they were in town on Monday night. I had no idea that anyone could do so many things on a steel guitar. He was just amazing, and a lot of fun to be around.

Great post Bill! I had a record of this and it sounded like Jerry Reed playing steel guitar. When I saw Gene play this at St. Louis, the whole row of pickers in front of me got up and stormed out complaining that it wasn't country. Those that stayed and watched were just spellbound. In person, the sound Gene got was VERY Jerry Reed like and the strings just had an explosive pop to them. It's also nice to hear the steel with a different rhythm pattern behind it. Until seeing your video post, I had no idea how or if he was picking the strings at all with the right hand. Gene had some great sounds and ideas and was ahead of his time.

Thank you, Bill. That's brilliant. This stuff, and ALL the other stuff you are offering is so appreciated. Greg--my first reaction to your story is that THOSE (the people walking out) are the people that steel guitar needs to be saved from. But then I realize how no-account they are. The world won't notice them one bit as they walk around and mutter. They have nothing to offer and likely did not and will not leave a mark. I do not expect any Youtube clips of them being presented here.

Is Gene mainly tapping the bass strings? It sounds like a piano, practically. Like hammered strings.
