Remembering Tommy Roots

Post by ray qualls »

For you fans of the late Tommy Roots, I've put a short video of him on my website. You might have to play it a couple of times at first but you can right click on it and make the video larger. Its only a one minute video but Tommy was one of my favorites. Enjoy!

Tommy was one great player. He left this life too early for us fans. I remember watching him in Ft. Worth at a music store and he was tearing that C6th tuning up. I have a couple of videos of him I would not sell for anything.

Tommy was one of those special people that I only knew briefly, but seemed like I had known him all my life. His flawless playing at the Tulsa Show, and his great humor off stage with us vendors, seems to linger on my mind at every Tulsa show since his passing. D.D.

The first video instruction course material I saw was put out by Tommy. Does anyone know if he was the very first?

Lee, info from a cassette that I have of Tommy's.
(Quote) His love of teaching and love of the steel guitar finds him pairing the two in his premier teaching videos for steel guitar. He was the first in this field to implement this teaching aid and unveiled his wares at the Scotty's International Steel Guitar Convention in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1982.
This is off his cassette" Uptown!Downtown!

By the way, is the video playing OK? I haven't had any comments on it!

Hey ya'll.....believe it or not,but I work at McKee Foods (Little Debbie's Snack Cakes)) with T.C.Roots the son of the late Tommy Roots from Texas.I was talking to T.C.(Tommy Charles) at work last week about music and that I like country music especially with steel guitar in it and that Ray Qualls my best friend plays the steel and he looked at me and said,my daddy played the steel and I asked him, what's your last name and he said,(Roots)and I said,oh my goodness I believe your're the son of the Tommy Roots that played at Tulsa,St Louis and many other places, great steel player! Ray is in hopes of getting in contact with him (the son)and will be sharing more with ya'll on his dad's life and his playing.
