NEW COURSE: Essential Bandstand Solos

When I was teaching privately, many players would come to me and ask for an appropriate lead for a particular song, since they played in bands... formal and informal... that required them to come up with a intro, turnaround, or 16 bar solo.

To address these requests, this new course is the first in a series called Essential Bandstand Solos.

This initial book/CD set contains 15 solos/turnarounds to some of the most popular traditional country tunes played here in Texas. Rather than presenting the entire song with verse, chorus, etc., these arrangements are for the most part 16-bar solos as would be played onstage in a band situation, some with intros and tags.
Like my other courses, the CD contains me playing the solo to a rhythm track, followed by the rhythm track itself for the player to practice with.

All recordings and tabs are for E9, and geared for the experienced beginner to intermediate player.

Some of the solos are my own melodic interpretations, while others are very close to those found on the original hit recordings. There's shuffles, ballads, swing-style songs, etc. I think y'all will find it useful.

If you guys are beginners like me, let me let you in on something here...Learn a couple of scales, like the ones one the carter starter video, and then buy one of these courses....I promise you, if you learn a couple of harmonic scales and then take these courses, you will be amazed at how far these courses will allow you to take your playing.....Actually, I think if you study the scales, IN ALL KEYS that are in Winnie Winston’s book, you will love these lessons. Thanks for your insight into learning the scales in Winnie Winston's book, and how they apply to the material I write.

About 25 years ago, I told Winnie that I thought page 28 in his book, the page that shows 6 harmonized scales in the key of E, comprised about 90% of steel guitar playing.

If a player has the willingness, and most all professional players do, of learning each of those page 28 scales in every key, they'd have about all the melody opportunities to play any country/whatever song at their fingertips.

I don't present any groundbreaking levels of difficulty in this course, though I do play in a number of keys. The vast majority of the material utilizes the basic scale positions found in Winston/Keith pg 28.

USPS Global Priority Mail, which I recommend for speed in delivery, to Scotland is $10.50, for a grand total of $35.50.

Airmail Letter Post, which takes a day or two longer, is 7.95, for a grand total of $32.95.

Shipping to Canada is the same as USA, so the regular $28 charge is all that's necessary.

UPDATE 2:

I leave tomorrow on a 3-day road trip with Gary P. Nunn and the Sons Of The Bunkhouse, and I leave for Missouri and ISGC on 8/28, directly from my mini-tour. I'll be returning home on 9/9.

Mine came in the mail yesterday.. Herbster must have used a mule with steriods... it got down here quick.. I am working at learning those tunes the correct way... Herb has outdone himself on this one. I encouraged the Herbster to start a Western Swing or Jazz Video series.. that I think would sell like hot cakes.. Not only is Herb a superb player-artist-musician.. He is a very gifted teacher.. Hammer down Herb..

I want to toss in high marks as well. The tab makes so much more sense, because you see what's actually happening rather than an arbitrary letter.

Herb's instruction, playing and recording quality are superb. His style on this material includes emulations of some guitar solos as well, which really helps an ancient 6-stringer like me relate better to the steel. Lots of gems in here that I can adapt to anything.

Plus his tone makes me want to throw my E9 guitar off a bridge...to me, there are *two* perfect pedal steel tones - Herb's and the Fender sound. There were time I swore I was listening to an old Strat or Jaguar that somebody had jury-rigged a Stringbender on!

I like this approach. I've only previewed my copy but am excited about giving it a go when I get the time, meaning when it starts getting dark too early to golf after work.

I too think the tab is a good reminder of what's really going on. I also like the method Scotty and Doug Baumier use with putting the music notation above the tab.

In 1995 I went to a Jeff Newman course where he outlined the standard scales using A&B pedals,B&C, and A pedal&F knee lever positions for the key of G. He also showed advantageous ways of phrasing by combining parts of each of these to form a kind of hybrid scale: same notes different positions. It is true if you learn every key and recognize away from your guitar the sound the position makes you will never be at a loss for playing almost any passage on the steel. Jeff made us write it down at the beginning of the book " I will learn these positions," too bad he isn't here to make sure we did....
