New E9 course: Shuffles, Ballads, and Waltzes

Post by Herb Steiner »

First, I want to thank everyone online and at the steel shows for the great response to my material, especially the Swinging On E9th series. Like Jim Cohen says, it give me motivation to do more. Image

It seems that folks like my E9 stuff so here's a collection of ten tabbed out arrangements of some classic country standards, with a CD of me playing the solo to a rhythm track, followed by the track without steel. So the student can play the solo himself, of course!

There are 3 "Texas shuffles" in the Ray Price/Johnny Bush style, 5 ballads in slower tempos, and 2 waltzes that everyone in country music has had to play dozens of times in their bandstand work.

I've tried to stay pretty traditional to the melodies of these tunes, what I call the "Jimmy Day" approach. Some of the ballads are reminiscent of Jimmy's Steel And Strings album. The shuffles are played like you'd have to play them on a Texas dancehall bandstand. The arrangements contain lots of licks, intros, turnarounds, etc. that can be applied to any number of country songs.

Here's one of the ballads I Love You So Much It Hurts Me, pretty much in the style of Jimmy Day.

An old Ray Price shuffle everyone likes to play is I've Got A New Heartache.

EDIT on 3/2/06: I guess my website guy moved the files when he did the page on the website. Go to the link below to play the tunes.

Other tunes in the course:
Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain - E
Crazy Arms - F
Heartaches By The Numbers - Bb
She Thinks I Still Care - C
Making Believe - F
Waltz Across Texas - A
We Could - E
Westphalia Waltz - G

The tab book is 24 pages in length, the CD about 40 minutes long.

It's not up on my website yet, but will be in a couple of days. The price will be $27 ($25 for course, $2 shipping). You can save the shipping charges by sending a $25 via Paypal to retrobilly@austin.rr.com and mention the Forum. I'll get one right out to ya.

Or you can send a check/money order to:

Austin TX 78735

... or if you've got more questions, do the email thing.

And thanks, once again. Image

Update: A gentleman emailed and asked if he could hear my version of "We Could" before he purchased the course.

So, here's We Could.

Also note that while these files on the Forum are .mp3's, the files on the CD are .wav's, so they can be played on any but the oldest CD players.

Frank just emailed me and asked what the copedent is for the course and could it be done on a standard tuning guitar.

Absolutely! The course simply requires 3 pedals and 3 knee levers... in most songs, only 2 knee levers. It's the standard 4 and 8 lowers and raises, and string 2 lowered a whole tone (on one song, as I recall).

Also, in answer to a couple other questions, the tunes were recorded with a 1970 Sho-Bud Professional, Marrs undercarriage, into a Digitech Genesis 3, into a Behringer board, into the soundcard of my computer.

Thanks to all for the good response and especially the emailed questions and compliments, which are very much appreciated.

Herb has the unusual combination of being a great player and a great teacher too. He is able to reach the intermediate skill player and the advanced player.
This material is loaded with the tunes we all want to play and Herb is not paying me to say this. He's great!

I got mine in the mail earlier this week. Its a great course, but if your going to do track on "Together Again", consider a copy sold to me. These are very nice tracks, not to mention the instruction is good as well....James

Herb; After listening to your version of "I Love You So Much it Hurts Me", I'm sure the spirit of Jimmy Day is smiling every time your tune gets played. There is so much in that tune that I've been looking for. Thanks for showing me where it is.

"Making Believe" is also a secret revealer too... Thanks again.
[This message was edited by Ray Minich on 21 November 2005 at 10:22 AM.]

To those who have ordered in the last week, especially those who've sent in payments with snail mail, my apologies! I was in Missouri for 5 days visiting my in-laws and figured Mom's computer would be available for me to answer email and get on the Forum.

WRONG! Image She's got Internet access problems but for her it's no big deal. For me, it's a disaster.

So now I'm back home and catching up with bidness. I will get a bunch of stuff out in the mail tomorrow, and thanks once again for the orders.

Thanks Lavelle, I put your package, among others, in the mail yesterday. But lemme tell ya, the post office was the most swamped I'd ever seen it. It was like last call for lifeboats on the Titanic!

It is the holiday season, so please be patient with the delivery schedule. This advice is from my friends at the Oak Hill TX post office.

It was like last call for lifeboats on the Titanic!
But, we needn't be concerned with lifejackets 'cause a steeler will always go down with the ship !

Mine arrived the other day in the mail, Thanks Herb !
