Steel Guitar LPs

I spent a day going through the inventory in my garage, and now I'm ready to move some vinyl back out to the community. See the new catalog page at:

I'll pay postage with in the US, but foreign orders will have to add $4 per LP to cover the additional cost. LPs are heavy!

Lots of great stuff here, but let me say this:

On the "Pieces of Eight" LP, the first track is a smokin' duo between guitarist Phil Baugh and Maurice Anderson. Maurice's solos on this track are worth the price of admission and then some- I have listened over and over to them, especially the first break with full voiced chords that sounds like a big band at full throttle. And you can't get it anyeher else unless you track down the original single!

and I'll mention some great tracks from Weldon Myrick and Bobby Garrett to mention 2.

For Tom Morrell (and Reece) fans, the "Sextet Sessions" lets you go retro, way back, to before Tom's Time Warp Days and into a real mainstream jazz groove- both He and Reece sound like great pianists (on the chordal stuff) and great horn players (on the single note stuff). I think Tom was using picks on every finger back then as well.

There are many other excellent albums here as well, but these are two of my favorites...and they are not available on CD!!!

There must have been a hundred people in this topic who said they wanted LPs. So far, I've had about ten orders. What happened to all that interest?

b0b - I'd probably be interested in some of those LP's if I had even the slightest idea on what songs were on them. Any chance of getting a list of what tracks are on each of those LP's?

Bob,is it possibly the pricing? Cd's can be purchased for slightly more than 14$. My guess is that converting these to CD would increase probability of sales, but then the cost of doing that greatly increases the risk of not making a profit.

Try having a sale somewhere between $5-$8 plus postage. Most of us who would purchase, more than likely are purchasing only so we can convert them to CD then probably will set the 33's on a shelf with the other 100-200 recordings that we have on vinyl and tape and rarely if ever,use them again.

I have to go to bat for b0b on this one. Go to the link in b0b's above post & read how much interest was expressed in these LPs. It looked like a sure bet for b0b. LPs in any quantity (read: heavy) are relatively costly to ship, and there's no reason that b0b should go into the red in offering this service to us. Also, a lot of these LPs are no longer available in any other format, whether cassette or CD. IMO, $14 is quite reasonable for an obscure or out-of-print LP, and it's not like I'm exactly rolling in the cash myself! Go to E-bay & see what other obscure/out-of-print LPs end up going for, and perhaps you'll agree that $14 is not unreasonable. Admittedly, it would be helpful to have track-listings w/the LPs, though... Vinyl has been on the way out for a while now, and I respectfully have to point out that, God bless it, the steel-guitar market is essentially a niche-market. As a result, some of these albums will never be released as CDs. Folks, some of these LPs are available nowhere else-- in unplayed, shrink-wrapped condition, no less-- so I respectfully urge people to avail themselves of this opportunity while it exists! (There-- end of rant. Whew! Got my flame-proof suit on, so I'm ready to sign off now...)

Collectible records are only worth as much as someone will pay.

I suggest waiting a week and if no takers then reduce the price. Wait another week and keep reducing until all are sold. Shipping costs can be kept low by shipping media rate. A folded piece of cardboard taped around the edge works fine to send an LP in.

I'm not going to lower the price, Bill, because I believe that these LPs are well worth $14. I rented a truck to haul them from Concord, built a room in my garage to store them, and designed a web page to sell them. For each sale, there's the overhead of PayPal fees and shipping boxes (already bought), as well as postage and sales tax, and the time it takes to process the order. Plus, the profits all go to keep the Forum up and running.

If you really think that $14 is too much to pay, then you obviously don't need any of these great LPs. I wouldn't sell any of my old used steel guitar LPs at any price because they are irreplacable. It's not just the music - it's the whole package. There's nothing like reading the liner notes on a big 12" jacket while you listen to one of the greatest steel guitarists in the world at one of his finest moments.

I have 3500+ lps of all kinds. I buy them every week at thrift stores, yard sales, record shows etc. Price range is 25 cents to a buck for me. A collector record is another story.

Since you have not sold as many of the lps as you thought you would and interest does not seem to be there at the $14 price and you posted here on buy and sell to that effect, I see no other reason these seemingly valuable LPs are not selling. You don't have to tell me anything about moving LPs and building storage for them--been there done that.

I was just voicing my opinion based on what Dr. Eason taught me in economics a long time ago in college. Seems the same rules apply today in pricing as it relates to supply AND demand. I just saw more supply than demand.
I hope that you are succesfull selling these at your price.

Steve, I'm also holding the last sealed Doug Jernigan LP course for you.

Bill, I agree that a buck makes sense for an old, used Led Zepp II or CCR LP. But I've seen these steel guitar LPs selling for $15-$20 at steel shows, sometimes in used condition. If I still have a lot of LPs in stock 5 years from now, I'll decide whether to lower the price or cart them to the dump. Until then, the $14 price will remain.
