My older brother says this guy played in a band that he had in the army in the 60-70's
and said he was the best he ever heard. Any body know of this guy or his playing? |

| Frank Baum was born on March 29th 1936.Don't know if he's still with us or not.His bio is too long to print here,it seems he had a long succesful career.There is a long,long bio with lots of pictures in the November 1991 issue of Steel Guitar World mag. Nine pages long. |

| I met Frank Baum when I was in Germany with Joe Sun. I believe that it was in 1980 or 1981 and he was playing steel as part of the staff band for the Gunther Gabriel televison show and we were one of Gunther's guest acts. We also dropped in on him another time when he was playing in a small night club in Munich. He was a real nice person and played exceptionally well. I remember also that his tunings and pedal setups were uniquely his own. It's been many years since I've heard or read anything about him. |

I,also,met Frank in Germany,when I was traveling with Tommy Overstreet back in the 70's. I believe he was playing a Framus steel back then. Never seen one before,& haven't seen one since.

Frank has been the #1 studio player in Germany for years, whenever producers needed steel guitar, Frank was there. He also participated in constructing the German "ABM" Pedal Steel Guitar.
His own guitar had reversed necks (like Chalker), he also played w/o fingerpicks.
As far as I know, Frank is retired and lives in Hawaii at least half of the year (when it's cold over here, like now  )

Unbelievable the music knowledge on this forum! Thanks for all the replies.
I know that Frank played for the U.S. Army recruiting band that my brother assymbled in the early 70's and they became good friends.
That band also included guitarist Johnny Mcmurtry from Waco, Tx. It is also true that he played a Framus in those days and played only with a thumb pick and two overgrown fingernails! I recieved an email saying he also composed several hawaiian instrumentals.

In the 90th I had the chance to share the same stage with him and his band "Country Green" twice. I was the bass player back than. He's a great musician and he is a teacher for steel (with or W/o pedals), dobro and uke too.

Neil,I did some shows in "Rattlesnake Saloon" and "Oklahoma Saloon" both owned by Bruno in Munich.Good old days,planty of fun and beer.I also played with Joe Sun at the country music festival in Ljubljana,Slovenia.I saw Joe few more times down town long time ago,don`t know what`s going on with him these days.I hope to put a nice band together one day and go play some shows in Europe.
