Interesting to see a steel guitar on Saturday Night Live last night. That sure doesn't happen very often. I really like Neil Young and lately I'm liking that kind of minimalist approach that is often the sign of a utility, multi-instrumentalist rather than a PSG "lifer". Cool axe too! It looked to be a very early (decal emblem) push/pull S-10 with a wood neck.

I caught that on Tivo... Nice to see steel and dobro both getting some face time on SNL. Was that Ben Keith? Now if they could just do something about the (skit)writing... I saw a special a while back about how they produce the show, and after seeing how much work and brainstorming goes into it, I'm even more puzzled by how universally crappy it is, except for the occaisional musical guest. Sigh.

It's beautiful to see "lifers" be minimalists...less is, more often, better than more.

Ben Keith is also Neil Young's producer. He is getting great reviews for the work on the "Prairie Wind" album.

Well said Al. I agree. At first I didn't think that was Ben Keith. Hard to believe that's the same cat that played on Patsy Cline's "I Fall To Pieces"!

Was Clinton Gregory playing fiddle for him? I saw him in Nashville and he said he had been doing some work with Neil

sorry i missed that, I love Ben Keiths playing...sweet subtle lines here and there, and just heartwrenching tone.

I'd have to say Ben Keith's playing on the "Harvest" record was my inspiration to play pedal steel. I'm sure I am not alone on that one.

definetly not Mike, me too...he was the only steel player i could name by name up until a few weeks ago. (Ive since discovered a few others thanks to this wonderful site)Made me determined to save up for a PSguitar, and so I did...it should be here tomorrow.

The steel on Old Man is just a couple notes....but they are a great couple notes

I love the steel on Albequerque
