Who's Steelin with Dierks Bentley Now?

Post by Joey Ace »

Whoever it is has some large to boots to fill, since Gary Morse (one of my favorite players) has moved on.

Gary's current singers are "Brooks and Dunn".

That spot is filled by the very excellent Kenny Grohman, one of the San Antonio boys. Plays great lead guitar as well.

We just did a show with Dierks Saturday and Randy Hess was subbing until they can find a full time replacement. Randy talked like they hadn't found anyone yet. However, that was Saturday and obviously Herb's friend has taken the gig since then.

I filled in last week & Tim Sargent is out with Dierks this week. I don't know if he's going to take the gig or if he is also just filling in.

As of this past week, Dierks' new steel player is me. I went out and did 10 shows in 11 days and he offered me the job somewhere in the middle of that run.

I've never been a fast steel player but "Gotta Lot of Leavin Left To Do" has definitely improved my game. I still have a problem with executing a couple of the licks but I'll get there.

Hey, Everybody!
Just wanted to thank you all for the congrats and the well wishes. This is the first time I've had a chance to sit down and get on the Forum in quite some time. Dierks works an awful lot and in turn I don't get home too often. The gig is going good and Dierks is a GREAT guy to work for. We're having good crowds and the shows have all been pretty much sold out. It's a lot different than the Mel Tillis gig. Where we now have bras and underwear thrown on stage, it used to be Depends and support panty hose! Slightly different age group it seems for some reason or another. Thanks again and if we're playing somewhere close to your home town...and chances are real good that we will!...we still have over 70 shows left between now and Dec.10th...look me up.

Tim,I know your on the road and it may be awhile before you reply to this ,but I was wandering, how much time did you have to learn all Dierks material ? It seamed like it all happened pretty quick. And do they expect you to play every single note the way Gary Morse did or is it "just get it as close as you can" kind of deal ? I was just curious how the big boys operated.

Wade....Dierks sent the tapes to me a couple of days before I had to go out with Mel Tillis....so basically I just listened a lot and made some charts and honed in on the singles and parts with the guitar player. Dierks doesn't want it "just like the record" so that helped me out by not having to copy everything exactly. "Gotta lot of Leavin'" is just like Gary played it (or at least as close as I can get it!) but it is real steel prominent and was he latest single at the time so I wanted to get it as close as I could. Thanks for asking!

Arty.....We're leaving out of Nastyville at 7:00 in the morning to head down your way. We usually load in around noon so if your in the area of the club look me up. You might have to knock on the bus door and wake me up!!! Looking forward to meeting you and hearing you pick.

See ya tomorrow,

Tim
