Jay Dee Maness video

I recently acquired the new Jay Dee Maness video and I just wanted to report on it to my fellow steelers. To start, this is a professionally produced video, if I wore a hat I would take it off to Kevin Ryan and his gang for a job well done!

The Jay Dee video does a good job of showing you many of Jay Dee’s signature licks (Yes, it includes his incredible “Misty” break) as well as taking the time to slow them down so you can get a better feel for them. The video also goes into Jay Dee’s studio career and some of the stories that go along with them. Jim Palenscar does a good job in the Q&A section to bring out a lot about the man behind his instrument and some of his career highlights. I highly recommend this video to all of the Jay Dee Maness fans as well as aspiring players who are looking to pattern their playing style after one of the legendary players of the instrument.

BTW, the video itself is worth the price of admission but it comes with a book with the licks in the video tabbed out, ready for your playing and learning enjoyment. Get this video, it will be a great addition to your collection of learning materials.

Hey Jim! thanks for the nice comments. We really appreciate all the feedback..good and bad. I think I'm going to take this time and mention a few things about JayDee and the video..

We approached JayDee about doing this video just about a year ago and he said that He has been asked for years to do a book or video and has always declined. He told us that he would give it a shot but it had to be great and it could not be "cheezy"..and if we had finished the video and he didn't like it.,..it would stop right in it's tracks and would not be released. So we knew we would have to do a stellar job delivering this to you guys.

Also, JayDee wanted it to be "usable" information for not just advanced players but rather aimed more toward intermediate players too.. I think we accomplished this..

I've been a huge fan of Jaydee's through the years, learned many of his solos..very difficult solos to learn I might add.. and wish there was a video a that time for me...
This video really gives you a clear inside view of Jaydee's thinking and approach to his playing style..A very inside look.. I believe this is a rare opportunity for steel players to really improve thier playing. You can take just pieces of his licks and solos and apply them to your own arsenal... This video can improve your playing.

I would like to add this is not a money making venture...it might seem like it, but if your in the business of supplying goods and services to steel players ...you know what I'm talking about..This was a labor of love for me.. I mean it! JayDee really wanted to let people get into what he does, which is a unique playing style that you can hear.. When JayDee's on the radio...you know..."thats Jaydee"

I hope you guy and gals check this video out and post your comments...I need to hear them for future video production that we will be doing..Thanks Kevin

You met your goal. The video and book are first rate. Thanks for the efforts.

My only comment for future improvement is:
Show the feet!

It's still a keeper!
I have many videos and this is one of the best.

I also picked up a copy of JayDee Maness's "Get Inside" famous solos/hot licks video recently and I wanted to pass along my comments as well.

First and foremost, it is a wonderful insight into some of JayDee's most memorable solos. He picks out some of his solo work from sessions with Ray Price, Desert Rose, Eric Clapton, and other bands.... songs like Misty, Hello Trouble, Tears In Heaven, Love Reunited, The Price I Pay, One Step Forward, Story of Love, Hard Times, She Don't Love Nobody, Once More, etc. He lets you hear the solo in the original song, then plays it unaccompanied on steel at full speed, then at about half speed. He doesn't detail each note and pull on tape, but he does provide a wonderful booklet along with the tape showing the full tab for each solo. (Cool!) In addition to that, he includes 14 licks complete with tab as well. In the middle of the tape there is also the afore mentioned interview where JayDee gives some personal history and demonstrates some of his style and techniques. It's a great visit with him. He closes the tape with credits over a wonderful, lilting, melancholy steel piece (I'm sure I should know the name, but I don't).

I haven't had a chance to dig into the tab booklet yet, but I'm looking forward to doing so. This will keep me busy!! For anybody who loves JayDee's playing, this video is pretty much a must have. And it's a great tool for anyone who is trying to move themselves along in their steeling skills. Kudos to JayDee for putting forth the effort in this first video of his. I hope there are more to come!

I also purchased a copy of this video from Jay Dee at the No. CA steel guitar jam and I'd like to add that even a second-rate beginner such as me is able to learn something from it. I really like the part where Jay Dee describes his approach to playing solos. This is really good stuff!

Had the pleasure of spending the day with him at the recent jam and what a class act he is, as well! Also got to feel the action on his P/P and it was the smoothest tightest action ever. He does all his own rebuilds and is a master mechanic too.

Jim, thanks for the JayDee link. I did a www.Google.com search (probably the best search engine--could find a needle in a haystack) and it didn't come up! I should have thought to just try JayDee's name as a URL, just like Paul, John, Brent, and others.

Well how about this: I sent JayDee a check for his video, THE NEXT DAY he came by my house and handed it to me! And he didn't know me from Adam- I just live nearby. So far, he's the only major steel guitar hero to actually show up on my door step. I sent checks to Lloyd and Buddy, guess they missed the turn down on Ventura...

For what it's worth, your video may have gotten lost in the mail - mine did (TWICE!!!). As far as I'm concerned, JayDee went above and beyond the call of duty to see that I got my video, despite a crazy mess with the post office.

Worth the wait, btw...

I would like to know the name of the song played at the end of the video while the credits are running. It's a wonderful piece. I'd buy a CD full of songs like that in a heartbeat. Does JayDee have a solo CD available?

That was an instrumental version of Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven". As most of you know, Jay Dee played the solo on the original cut.

Jaydee, Is there another way to pay you by credit card? PayPal does not support credit card payments from South Africa. Everyone else in the States does and I have done numerous transactions without any problems.
(I cannot buy from the Forum's catalog with my credit card because of PayPal. I would love to, but I can't.)

Jim, that was a sweet piece of production work on JayDee's instrumental "Tears In Heaven" augmenting his wonderful playing. Did JayDee record other studio instrumentals at the same time? Super video from a SUPER player. Not often that we get to look "inside" the thinking of such a unique stylist- just looking at the tab gives you some idea of why Jay Dee's so recognizable and original. Many, Many thanks for taking the trouble to make this available JayDee!
