Who played Wembly 1979 ?

Post by Richard Nelson »

When I was a very young man I played it with Gloria . I know Terry Bethel was there. Who else ? Boxcar was there but I dont think he had a steel player. Ronnie Milsap was it Dicky Overby. I think Tammy Wynette was there . Marty Robbins , B J Thomas . Basil Hendriques I remember seeing him. I think Jack Daniels had a stand there and they were giving away samples. A lot by what I can remember of the crowd. Haggard was there . Has anybody got an old programme

Hi,
Check with Allan Thompson he played there quite a lot, he may be able to help you.
If I see him today I'll ask him for you.

I was over there one year and I think it was '79, but it could have been '78 or '80. I am not good with dates. I was hanging with Charlie McCoy, Lloyd Green, and Johnny Gimble as I worked with Charlie at the time.

Whatever year it was, it was the year that I was playing Lloyd's steel and broke the E to F lever right before he had to go on in Paris. We still laugh about it today, but it twern't funny then! Of course, Lloyd did his set and you would never know he was "handicapped." What a freakin' pro!!

Richard, I was over there several times with Loretta Lynn. I'm almost positive I was there in '79.

Bob I dont remember Loretta being there but I remember seeing a bit on TV once and there was a guy with glasses and long hair playing steel . Was that you ? I saw you with RC in Branson 98 or so . Looked like a whole re-think on the hair - do . Mind you I saw a video of Coonz playing with Mel recently and he was wearing a moose hat . what went back then ? Drugs ?

Richard, I'm pretty sure I was there. As far as the hair, for one thing I had hair back then, and I chalk the other up to immaturity. That's the only logical explanation I have.

I have a colour-slide that I took (it's dated '78) showing Buddy out behind the Wembley Arena carrying his steel case! (WAS he there two years running?)

I was playing there with someone that year, but, due to the exalted company I was in, I managed to keep a low profile.....

I can't remember what year it was,but I did the 8th or 9th fest w/ T.O. I remember,we were on the plane w/ Loretta Lynn's group,& the Oak Ridge Boys. I remember Duane Allen of the Oaks, tellin' me that they had to get back to the states quick, for a another p.a.
They took a "SST" back. Made it from Paris to N.Y.C. in 3 hrs. 45 mins.

Richard - yes, you're much older than I am. ;-)> We were there in 1980, I think. Don't you remember the party on the plane? God Save the Queen!

Freddy Fender was there. I had just joined his band, which was put together from scratch and there wasn't enough time to get our credentials together for us to go with him. (He used another artist's band.) I was very disappointed. Can't believe that was 25 years ago! Image Boo

Yeah, a "really big beer", and at room temperature, in Rotterdam. Here's proof - the work permit dated 1980.
Jeez, I don't know what I'd do with all my free time if I didn't have the Internet to play around on.
