Is this a forum or chat room?

Post by Stephen Gregory »

Just wondering. Is it proper decorum or etiquette to post over and over again( I'm not talking about 3 or 4 times) within a post every time you have a thought or comment? It seems this is more of a "chat room" approach as opposed to a forum approach. What do you think? Seems to be a trend lately.

I always try to keep my posts in any single thread down to your suggested 3 or 4. But I, too, have noticed what you're talking about (like posting over 100 times in the same thread).

Could it be that some are impressed by mere "numbers"?

Not me.

I'm not sure of the definition, but I think a forum is set up for posting a message and receiving posted replies. A chat room is set up for instant conversation.

When people start using a Forum topic as a two or three way private conversation, I sometimes suggest that they take it to email.

When people post in what I perceive to be the wrong area, in areas that I moderate, I move the topic.

Many of my decisions seem arbitrary, because I can't read everything that's posted. Each of us has a different, narrow viewport into the Forum. It's amazing that it's survived so long, with so few rules.

Moved to "Feedback and Testing"
