I may start looking in the Sarasota area for a place to spend the Winter within the next year or so. My sister has a home in Sarasota and seems quite happy with the weather and surroundings.
Is this area happening for steel guitar and bands? I would be nice to remain active and play out. |

There are several steel guitar players in the Sarasota area.
Let me know when you are in the area and I'll put you in touch.
However, while there are many pickers in this part of Florida, the paying jobs are few.

Hi Blake:
Thanks for the reply. What other areas in Florida would be steel player friendly for playing out and yet experience the good life as a Florida resident such as boating, golf, etc?

Welcome Len, When you get settled in, you must come to the FSGC, 2nd Wednesday of every month and join in the Fun of picking and grinning....Great music and fellowship and a group of great guys and gals, to know.. you'll like it I am sure and some of the fellows can better inform you of the "Picking Places" . We are located at Lake Panasofkee, at Catfish Jonnies Restuarnt & Club. Great food and entertainment...You will be welcomed by all...Join In....Best to you .... Jennings

Hi Len,
You'll have to check us out at the FSGC jams like Jennings said.
I'm from Arlington Mass. and there wasn't much steel going on up there when I left either. Now it seems Frank has one going on in the Town I lived in for a while in the 60's.
Like Blake says, most want you to play for nothing down here, but there is work if you search it out.

Len,
I'm only familiar with the Tampa area and even with that, there are some gaps in my knowledge.
As Don and Jennings said, come and visit at one of the Florida Steel Guitar Club meetings
and you will meet some of the local musicians.
There is more going on during "Snowbird Season" than at other times of the year.
Just let us know when you will be in town.

Thanks to all for the great replies and hospitality.
I am looking forward to spending some time there next year and looking at several locations. I will also look forward to meeting up with some steel players. |

Hi Len, I spent many winters in Florida, I played one "snowbird" season with the Geritol 3 , in Indian Harbor Beach Resort and Tennis Club.
We played for members only, 2 nights a week cocktail and dancing, 7:30 to 10:30 and got paid well for only 3 hours..
The resorters were renting there for the 3 months season and the the club paid the whole shot for their winter customers.
This is around Cocoa Beach area on the Atlantic side though.Good luck....al
