I agree with Dwayne. Eric Heywood's tone is unmistakable. His performance on Son Volt's "Straightaways" album has always floored me. It was the first CD I tried to learn when I got my first steel.

This is hard:mine was Lloyd on Charley Pride in person,man those sounds,that steel on Old cotton fields,and Kaliga,WOW. SO MANY!!
Jeff Newman on his record A few good frinds!!

...I'd have to say Robert Randolph...sometimes it takes me a little while to figure out if that's him and not Buddy or Lloyd, but then I just know...yep, that's Robert alright...

My good friends Speedy West, Julian THarpe, Zane Beck, Maurice Anderson all come to mind.

Also I agree as mentioned Curly Chalker, Jerry Byrd, Buddy Emmons, Ralph Mooney, Lloyd Green, Pete Drake, John Hughey, Bob White. All of them had a unique sound they weren't clones and could have been if they wanted too. When you heard them youy knew who it was holdin' the bar!
