Help Big E ,on "strange chord'

Post by Jody Sanders »

The band leader just called and said he wanted to start doing an old Johnny Bush song titled "Sound Of A Heartache". He said it is easy to play but has a "strange chord" in the entro and verse of the song. He said it was the Big E on steel. Not having heard it, I don't know what the "strange chord" is . Please help. Jody.

The song is in the key of D, and the mystery chord is a C9, found on strings 5, 6, and 8 at the first fret, using pedals A & B and the E-lower lever.

Thanks Herbster, I see where that chord may come in handy on a few others as well.

Jody,
If you are playing a D major on the 5th fret (A & B pedals down), the same chord (C9) is available at that fret. Come off of the A pedal and engage your knee lever that raises your Es (4th and 8th strings) a half-tone. The same voicings that Herb describes on the 5th, 6th and 8th strings are now on the 6th, 8th and 10th strings on the fifth fret. This position lends itself a little better to playing the song's licks (at least the way I'be been accustomed to playing it).

While those are the correct notes, a close listen to the solo reveals a slide from the 5th fret down to the 1st (C9) then back to the 3rd fret for the straight C chord, then back to the 5th for the D chord. And you don't change string grips.

Actually, I have a new course of 20 Intro, solos and turnarounds from Johnny Bush recordings and this intro, as well as the 4-5-1-1 turnaround in the middle of the song, is played and tabbed out.
