It came as a bit of a shock to me on December 9th when I had a syncophatic eposide (I fainted).
The worst part was that when I met the floor I banged my head pretty good and knocked a disk in my neck. When I came to, my right arm was numb from the elbow down. Later, after a couple of days went by the arm got better but the pickin' fingers on my right hand were numb. Radial nerve took a hit in my neck. Disks around C4 thru C6 got a minor herniation.
Well, all is getting better now (6 weeks later, can play the PSG again) but the orthopedic surgeon I saw said that this is typically the result he sees from drivers that don't wear their seat belt. When the head/neck hits the stearing wheel the neck gets a whack in the vicinity of C4, C5, and C6 vertebrae and it can take out your hand & arm function, sometimes for a long time.
I used to be somewhat lax about the belt, but when I found out what one can lose in just a moment, I use it always now. |

I wasn't sure I had a C6 vert. either, but I'm pretty sure last night while I was practicing I hit a minor herniation around the 16th fret....talk about OUCH!!
In all seriousness, Ray, I'm glad to hear you've recovered ok....I only have a lap belt in my '71 Chevy p/u, so I'm always aware of that big steel steering wheel 18" from my head.....Take care.

For a real neat picture check out http://www.fauxpress.com/kimball/med/sensory/spdiv.html
Shows all the nifty parts that can go wrong. Cover the little one's eyes though, it's kinda graphic.[This message was edited by Ray Minich on 28 January 2004 at 03:21 PM.] [This message was edited by Ray Minich on 28 January 2004 at 03:22 PM.] [This message was edited by Ray Minich on 28 January 2004 at 03:24 PM.] [This message was edited by Ray Minich on 28 January 2004 at 03:40 PM.] |
