I have some songs by Billy Thompson, ca. 1960s. The steel player does some nice C-6th playing on "Worried Over You" and "Harbor Lights". The steel guitar might be a Fender 2000.???

those songs are from a very obscure LP he did in the early 60s for the bokay label, recorded in fort worth. the liner notes do not say who is on steel, but curtis potter is singing harmony on the songs.

i haven't listened to it in ages. billy had a band in west texas for years in the 60s, so the player is most likely his own band member rather than a session player.

20 years later, he did an another LP in colorado on which a ronnie miller plays steel.not likely to be the same guy as on the bokay LP.

Hi Mitch, I received a personal message from a gentleman in West Texas, who knows Jimmy Young, a former fiddler for Bob Wills. Jimmy believes it was Shorty Messer that played steel for Billy Thompson in the 1960s.

I knew Jimmy Young who was also a fiddle player for the Merl Lindsey Band... I was hired just out of high school to replace Shorty Messer at the Star Club in Amarillo, Texas. I was so intimidated by his single-string work that I never did feel comfortable on that band and I have often wondered where he is today...I saw an advertisement in a steel magazine with his picture one time but nothing since.

If anyone knows anything about Shorty Messer today I would sure appreciate a message!
